Pre-race routine:

woke up at 5:30 a.m. left home at 6:00 a.m. and arrived at 6:30 a.m. unfortunately i had to park about a half mile away and haul all my gear while pushing my bike. had a little coffee at home and had water, gatorade and a half of a protein bar in the car ride.
Event warmup:

deep breathes. tried to relax as much as possible. All this open water swimming is all psychological. just chatted with some tri club friends and tried to keep focused.
Swim
  • 10m 10s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

did better than i thought, was relaxed and took it slow. got kicked a few times which made me stop but was able to get back into my rythym. only did about 100 meters of backstroke. started at the back of my wave and kept to the left side since i breathe mainly to my left.
What would you do differently?:

try and go a little faster and go in the water in the middle of my wave as i get more comfortable with my swimming. I'm a little better at bi-lateral breathing now so getting splashed in the face is no longer a problem since i can simply change my breathing side.
Transition 1
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

pretty quick transitions. a little tough running barefoot out from the beach to the paved parking lot. used a bottle of water to rinse off the sand and then put on baby powder to be able to get my socks on easier. was a little hard to hold my balance while standing on one leg while putting on my bike shoes.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 34m 44s
  • 11 miles
  • 19.00 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

push a little harder and practice riding more in the aero position. i plan on getting aero bars next race season.
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

happy with my transitions
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 30m 30s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

a little strange running on trails. had to keep watching the ground for potholes and rocks.
What would you do differently?:

run more on the grass and push harder on the last mile.
Post race
Warm down:

walked a little, grabbed a bagel and looked for water but couldn't find any. found some club friends and chatted a while before heading home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

the trail run

Event comments:

had a good race, was pleased with the swim and transitions. lots of spectators cheering us on.
