Swim
Comments: I'm used to the idea of getting beat up on the swim, but the time trial start eliminated that. Was a nice change. Sighting was tough coming back in due to the sun, but there was an ambulance with its lights on by the swim exit which helped guide me to shore. Not sure if that was for our benefit, or if there was an actual emergency. What would you do differently?: I went out too fast in the beginning due to adrenaline. Once I slowed down a bit, my breathing got under control. I had nobody to draft behind, but never got off-course. Judging from the times, it appears the long run up the hill towards transition was included in the swim time. Transition 1
Comments: Smooth transition. Wore tri top and tri shorts during swim, so just had to throw on my shoes, sunglasses and helmet. Bike
Comments: Going into this, I thought I'd get passed repeatedly since I just started biking again a month ago and haven't done any speed work (just one or two comfortable 13-26 mile rides per week with my gf). I only remember getting passed a couple times, and it was actually a lonely ride. Stayed on aero bars virtually the entire ride, and refrained from going too hard since I have not tested my limits on the bike. What would you do differently?: I could've pushed the back section a bit more instead of coasting in. Transition 2
Comments: Another smooth transition. What would you do differently?: I ran in my Nike Frees because I knew I could just slip them on and go, with the laces pre-tied. Next time, I'll get some Yankz for my racing flats and wear those instead (I feel faster in the flats than the Frees). Run
Comments: After leaving T2, my calves started to cramp up. After about 1/4 mile, I had to stop and stretch them out. After that, they were fine. I don't think I got passed on the run, which made me happy. What would you do differently?: Figure out why my calves cramped. Could be because I only had one brick leading up to the race. Post race
Warm down: Warm-down consisted of walking to my car to get my ID, so I could get a free beer and food. What limited your ability to perform faster: The fact I had a few years away from swimming and biking and just picked them back up a month ago. I feel I did the fastest race I could on this day. Event comments: I felt race organization and the venue were awesome. I picked up swimming and biking last month as cross training for my upcoming marathon, and signed up for this sprint for fun since this was a cut-back weekend in my running mileage. Now, I am re-hooked on triathlon! I am doing an oly distance next month. After my fall marathon season, I am going to focus on ramping up the bike training and do tri's next year (would like to do my 2nd ironman, did my first back in '05 and would love to improve upon it). Woke up at 4 a.m. and had a full breakfast since the start was still 4 hours away. Had to leave home at 4:45. Being my first tri in over 3 years, I think I was a tad nervous and had to stop to pee 3-4 times on the drive there. Packet pickup and transition set-up went smoothly. It feels so bad-ass to get marked up with numbers for the race. The assigned rack spaces were a nice touch.
I didn't do much of a warm-up, which is bad I know.
