Pre-race routine:

The night before I pretty much had everything ready to go. This was my first every Olympic distance race (third race ever), so I was eager to see if my training had me in a position to be successful. I have been training and competing for 15 months now.

Woke up at 5:45 and began getting everything to the car. My wife and I had to drop off our son at the in-laws, so we needed to leave earlier than I would have liked.

Ate a full PBJ at 7:00 and then a 1/2 PBJ at 9:00--the race started at 10:00. Set up transition at about 8:30 and hung out with familiar folks and tried to calm my nerves.
Event warmup:

After a short racer meeting at 9:30, I jumped in the lake to get comfortable with the temperature and such. Maybe swam about 400 yards total. I was ready as I could be.
Swim
  • 21m 49s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

I did a mass start swim a month or so ago, but with far fewer racers. I don't know if it was the nerves, but my breathing was off for the first 400-500 yards. I kept thinking that this is ridiculous because swimming is my strength.

Congestion finally started to clear out by the first turn buoy. My breathing got better and latched on the hip of someone that was swimming extremely straight. I followed him almost to the very end of the swim. I didn't have to do hardly any sighting. He was straight as an arrow. I noticed he had a beard and found him after the race and thanked him. He too was surprised at how straight he swam.
What would you do differently?:

I need more open water practice. I won't get as lucky as I did with drafting next time. I guess the early breathing issues were the nerves, hopefully that wlon't happen again
Transition 1
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

A lot of work is needed here. My wife said I cam out of the water in 15th place, but out of transition in 21st place. My major issue is that I have very little bike handling skills. Therefore, I elected to down a GU and take in some water before I got on my bike. I knew that if I attempted to take a GU on the bike, I would potentially be looking at a disaster. Also, haven't perfected the flying mount/shoes clipped in transition yet. That will come.
What would you do differently?:

I wouldn't do anything differently here as I don't have the skill yet. With practice, I won't have to try to get nutrition in at transition and I will get on the bike and on the course faster.

Comments:

I did as well as I thought I would do. I have only been riding a bike for 15 months and have only had my tri specific bike for 3 months. We have had a lot of rain this summer, so a high percentage of my training has been on a trainer. That is not good for someone who needs to work on bike handling/gearing/hills.

Though I expected to get passed by a lot of people, there were times that I got frustrated. It just is tough knowing that I am in better condition than so many of these better cyclist are. By the end of the swim I was in 15th place. By the end of the bike I was in 45th place. That hurts ones' spirits.

I knew before the race and nothing has changed--I need a lot more training. I look forward to Jorge's training plan this winter.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing that I can think of. I went hard, and did the best I could.
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

I think this went fairly average. I did down a GU in transition which slowed me down a bit. Once I improve my bike handling skills, I will do this towrds the end of my bike rather than in transition

Comments:

I have been struggling with IT Band issues the last 2.5 weeks. I have used the foam roller as much as possible, but expected my knee to hurt. I was a little concerned when I learned that the out portion of the run was going to be on the ATV trail. Part of the trail was muddy an potholes galore. Some areas of water were too large to jump--we just had to run through them.

My knee hurt the very minute I started running. I was stopped dead in my tracks about 5 minutes in to the run portion. I was not happy at all. After that one large buckling feeling incident, things started to progressively get better. By the end of the race there was no pain. Discomfort, but no pain. I didn't push the run as hard as I wanted to. Between the trail running and the IT band issue, I probably went about 2 to 3 minutes slower than I normally would have gone
What would you do differently?:

I should have know about the course before hand and practiced some trail running
Post race
Warm down:

hopped in the lake for about 15 minutes

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My bike training (which will come)
IT Band issue (which will get better)

Event comments:

I had fun. the weather cooperated, I beat my goal time, and my wife offered wonderful support
