Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:45 and showered, kissed the wife and kids, threw my stuff in the car and hit the road. Listened to some NPR and ate a banana, Clif Bar and drank some water. Got to the race site at 6:00. Parked and headed into transition. Got all set up fairly quickly then just wandered around a bit.
Event warmup:

Decided to wear the wetsuit even though the water temp was 78. I really just wanted to wear it as a practice run since I haven't worn it i a race. 15 minutes before the start I got in and did a quick few strokes then got out and just waited.

Comments:

First I have to say thanks to the woman who informed me my zipper wasn't all the way up about a minute before the start....she fixed me up. I had an awesome swim. This was only my second race, and I had learned a lot after the first...which I put into play here. I started a row or two back, but I should have been up front. Spent the first minute or so getting around people, then I was able to open it up nicely. The second turn came quickly and I hit the buoy dead on...same with the 3rd and 4th. Ended up overtaking some of the people from the first wave who started 3 minutes ahead of us. Swam right up the boat ramp till I was waist deep and jogged out of the water. I had no idea where I stood at that point, but there were lots of people cheering for me. :)
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I probably could have pushed it even more and been closer to 8 flat, but I was comfortable. Next time have the confidence to start at the front.
Transition 1
  • 02m 16s
Comments:

I can definitely shed some time here. I think it went pretty smoothly, but removing a wet wetsuit for the first time took some time. I need to get a nice form fitting tri top and not care about how my gut looks in it. I didn't wear my Aevero top under my suit and it hung up a bit putting it on. Otherwise I was outta there pretty quickly.
Bike
  • 32m 25s

  • 20.36 mile/hr
Comments:

I had fun on the bike. I haven't trained a whole lot, but the fact that I was able to average 20mph even with some decent sized hills tells me I'm not doing horribly. My quads felt really cold for the first half, which was an annoyance and nothing more. Got passed by 6 or 7 people , but for the most part I was all alone for the whole ride. Drank a little, mashed down the hills where I could, and tried to stay smooth and aero.
What would you do differently?:

Spend more time on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

Dismount went fine, ran to my spot, helmet off, Zoots on, belt on, visor on, out the gate. I made the mistake of taking abig drink from my bottle as I left, and that gave me a side stitch during the run.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Run
  • 26m 14s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was just okay, but I'm happy with my time. I took it really easy out of T2, just to get the legs working. The first 1/2 mile or so is on pavement, so it was easier going. Then it jumped onto the horse trails and the sand just kind of sucked my energy. Fought a side stitch, but just kept plugging away. Got passed by a few people, but kept a steady pace. ran the whole thing except for about 10 paces on a short steep hill up to the lake level. That actually fixed my side stitch so I should have done it earlier! Had a good strong finish, and heard the announcer call my name Felt pretty damn good.
What would you do differently?:

Just keep training.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a bagel, orange and water and just walked lingered near the finish. Didn't stick around for long since I wanted to get home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think I did pretty well for only my second race after only 3 months of training.

Event comments:

I had a great time. Great organization and support. The racers I interacted with were all very friendly. Definitely do this one again.
