Event warmup:

short swim to get wet / check water temp / check goggle fit
Swim
  • 47m 7s
  • 1500 meters
  • 03m 08s / 100 meters
Comments:

I got my 1500m swim completed. I didn't swim fast or straight, in fact I decided to swim a bit wide to get out of the full contact area. I was clearly holding up the pack and was getting my feet taken out from me repeatedly. I am pretty sure I added a 100-200m to this swim by going wide both loops. Swam steady and slow when I was contact free. Sighting was a mother on the way back on both loops since the sun was right where we needed to see (I actually sighted off the sun for awhile).
What would you do differently?:

Get faster so I am touching feet and going around instead of being the one who is getting run over. Although pitifully slow this was a good swim - I didn't freak and got back in the water for the second loop (there was some doubt pre-race)
Transition 1
  • 04m 32s
Comments:

At least a 1/4 mile run to T1 from the swim on tarp covered sand and carpet covered concrete. I think the RD did the best he could with what he had to work with. Next year the community will have more water so the course will be likely quite a bit different.

Bike
  • 1h 09m 10s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.56 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike went pretty well. I stayed conservative on the power meter and just watched the power average and tried to keep it 220-230W. Quads and Hams were burning a bit towards the end (breathing was fine). I attribute the legs to not enough time in training on this bike in aero and not enough time on the bike since the HNH 100.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. I am sticking with 20 mile rides for a bit until I am sure I have the fit issue worked out and then will creep up from there.
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

Nothing fancy - conservative dismount / nice and easy swap of the shoes and off I go.
What would you do differently?:

Year 2 I will start working on flying dismounts or something that allows me to run in transition without bike shoes. I decided to avoid this altogether year 1.
Run
  • 57m 34s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

305 wasn't on when I grabbed it on so it needed to find satellites (knucklehead). About a 1/2 miles later it picked up and told me I was running at 8'/mile pace. I actually think I came out of transition a bit faster which is really good for me off the bike. Unfortunately the pace dropped as I went until the ramps at the stadium really did me in. I had to push to get back to 9'/mile pace and finish up just under 3 hours.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure the Garmin is on when the race starts.

Event comments:

As usual, On Ur Left puts on another great race. Volunteers were great. Water / G-ade / Heed was cold. Pizza was warm. Really nice T-shirt and finisher medal. The police officers were AWESOME. This course crossed the paths of the traffic quite a few times and it seemed to me the racers got the right of way every time. I thanked every officer I came to because I was stopped for traffic for quite awhile in my first DU. The bike /run course was pretty well marked. There were only a couple of spots that took a second to figure out where to go. Great job again by Aaron and OUL - I am positive they will take the comments and make it even better next year. I will likely give the two "local" races for me a shot again next year (Bridgelands + Towne Lake)
