Swim
Comments: First salt-water swim. Took longer to adjust to salt water than I was expecting. Bad chafing of neck from wet suit. Unsure of target destination after initial turn. Combination of those 3 factors made it tough for me to take more than 6-10 strokes at a time. Probably could have shaved 3-5 minutes with more salt-water preparation before race. Water temp was not an issue once we started. Neoprene cap + AquaSphere mask + full wetsuit did the trick. What would you do differently?: Better preparation - practice sighting. Find experienced racer and draft/navigate off him. Consider sleeveless wetsuit + add-on sleeves in attempt to minimize neck chafing. Transition 1
Comments: Stopped for picture coming out of water. 400 yards from water exit to T1. Walked most of it was feet were numb from cold water swim. Quick potty break in T1. Stepped on thorns on way to bike that I had to peel out of my feet before putting on socks. Took time coming out of T1 walking my bike to mount line. Probably too leisurely. What would you do differently?: Minimize barefoot walking to avoid ground hazards. Have a bit more urgency. Could have shaved at least 5 minutes off this. Bike
Comments: Hip flexors, IT bands, and glutes were tight through first half of course. Stretched at first aid station and was golden after that. Could have pushed harder on bike but not sure how that would have impacted my run. Easiest bike ride I've had entire year after training on significant hills for all my long rides. Awesome support on course. What would you do differently?: Train at higher cadence and aim for higher cadence/speed in race. Reduce time spent at aid stations. Transition 2
Comments: Changed socks. Ate sandwich and drank entire Gatorade. Potty break. Relaxed and leisurely. What would you do differently?: Have a bit more urgency. Could have shaved at least 4 minutes off this time. Run
Comments: Exceeded my wildest expectations for what I'd be able to pull off after 56 mile bike. Legs felt fresher after bike than they ever had during training - attributed to flat course, lower exertion, lower HR. I was shocked to pull off that high of a run:walk ratio, especially while maintaining that pace. Pace remained consistent through entire run. Bridges were tough. Aid stations were plentiful and support was awesome. What would you do differently?: Nothing - I couldn't have asked for much better for my first HIM Post race
Warm down: Walk, water, banana, massage. What limited your ability to perform faster: Too relaxed in transitions. Perhaps too easy-going on bike. Lack of preparation for swim. Event comments: Loved the race. Loved the venue. Loved the support. It was an awesome event and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Last updated: 2010-08-12 12:00 AM

Setup transition. Stretch/massage stick. Bagel w/ peanut butter, cliff bar, bottle of gatorade. Donned wetsuit 20 minutes before water entry. Good timing.
Lunch day prior: Chicken sandwich, salad
Dinner day prior: Tuna steak, mashed potatoes
Dinner 2 days prior: Spaghetti, salad, bread
Swam back and forth in attempt to warm up while waiting for my wave to start. Was shivering nonetheless while waiting. Body temp warmed up immediately upon start of race.
