Run
Comments: NEVER do anything different the night before. NEVER eat anything different the night before. Excuses are like *****s, everyone has them and they stink. But boy, did I mess up. First 1/2 was good, 2:02 (but the split didn't get chip-timed...???? The second half was miserable. I quit drinking anything but water at about mile 9. Electolytes and sodium washed out of my system, and I bonked big time. took 3 hours for the second half. Owch. What would you do differently?: Start a bit slower, and bring a mixture of hydration/nutrition that I like and train with. Also, NEVER ever eat anything different the night before. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Night before meal. I had heard that whole wheat waffles were a good choice. I guess maybe if that's your routine. That, plus my wife's excellent berry pie. Plus coffee. Wow. The next AM, throw a little G1 down the gullet, then hit the mens room for 20 mins before the race. Then every 3 miles or so for the first 10. Tummy doesn't like new foods on a long run. Also, the super high humidity helped wash out the nutrition from the body more quickly, requiring a better plan. I had done 20 miles with relative ease in training, but with good nutrition and hydration. I blew it here, with poor pre-race meal and poor during race nutrition. Event comments: My first marathon. Personally, a crappy race. I felt horrible after the first 1/2. But overall, a great race provided by the organizers. May do the 1/2 next year. Last updated: 2010-08-16 12:00 AM
