Swim
Comments: That is some murky water (and there are some very large dead fish there too.) The swim itself was fine though - a little contact here and there but otherwise I was very comfortable. I saw my wife who had started in the wave in front of me and gave her a little goose. Glad it was her and not someone else in retrospect. I was slow but that can be attributed to not training for the race. By the way, that will probably be a theme here... What would you do differently?: Train. Transition 1
Comments: T1 went fine. You have to run up a very long flight of wooden stairs which are a little treacherous when its been raining all morning. I didn't fall though and made it in and out pretty quickly. I even popped the butt of another girl with us coming out of the water - I was handsy that day. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: I felt fine on the bike. This was not a hard course compared to where I usually ride. I felt like I passed many people and didn't get passed that much so I was a little surprised that my avg speed was in the 17's. The road being wet didn't bother me except for making my water bottle very slippery. It jumped out of my hand about halfway through the course so I didn't have anything else to drink. It was my Mountains of Misery bottle too. It will be missed. What would you do differently?: Not drop my favorite bottle. Oh yeah, and train. Transition 2
Comments: Everything was fine here except for missing the rack. I went one too far, realized my mistake, then had to turn around and go one rack back. There was a spectator in the way who was sightseeing and I unfortunately knocked (him, her?) on their butt. If you're reading this I'm sorry but you shouldn't be in the transition area. What would you do differently?: Yell louder. Run
Comments: The lack of training became very obvious here. My legs felt like they were full of sand so I kept my cadence up with small steps. Made it through, but again, I should have run once or twice in the last couple months. What would you do differently?: Train. Post race
Warm down: Hung out on the road with a couple friends until my wife came in from the bike. She had blown out a tire and was a little frustrated so I ran/walked the 5k with her trying to calm her down. I guess it worked - she said she loved me still. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training. Funny, though, for not training I performed alot better than I thought I would. Maybe coming into a race relaxed and carefree is better than coming in all tense and nervous... Event comments: This was a great race - it was well run and fully staffed. There was some music afterwards but the food was limited to PB&J. We opted for burgers up the road. We'll definitely be back next year - everyone enjoyed the race and venue. Tried to avoid the many raindrops that were falling.
Not much other than a short swim. I did not train at all before this race so I pretty much just had fun instead of being all uptight.
