Swim
Comments: I still feel that I can improve this swim. I was nowhere near the front. I got off course (to the inside of buoys) a few times. I nearly had a panic over some of the chop. It was rough out there! I was happy to "survive" and do OK, just OK. What would you do differently?: 1. Practice more real-world conditions 2. Swim on more cloudy and high wind days 3. Sight more efficiently and more often Transition 1
Bike
Comments: This was a very good biking day for me, although I'm surprised/disappointed I didn't get above an 18mph avg. Must be those hills and the gusts on the straightaways. I really don't see a lot of room for improvement here in my memory, but maybe I wasn't red-lining myself to the fullest. I was really focused on fueling and staying calm for the run. I also got my hydration dialed in, and that felt great! What would you do differently?: I noticed some lumbar spine/back pain. I should work that more and practice more long rides down on the aerobars. Can I be more aero in general? Do I need a dorky helmet? I also wonder if more power through lifting would help my bike, or if just more time in the saddle is needed...hmmm. Ideas? Transition 2
Run
Comments: After last year's nightmare of a run, Timberman 2010 proved to be easy! I took the first loop at a moderately fast pace. Nothing too crazy, and the heat proved to be a non-issue (unlike last year's upper 80s) as it felt cool and/or rainy throughout the run. I loved the comraderie and support of the runners and volunteers. I felt really "at home" on the course, yet eager to finish, so no walking except at one water table just after the midpoint of loop 1. I was so happy to see so many teammates from Wheelworks Multisport on the run. What a great set of teammates! I also was admittedly very happy people still going out for loop 2 as I was finishing. Starting in the LAST WAVE can be a mind-game as everyone seems to be done waaay before you, but it's great fun to pass folks and cheer them on as I go by. What would you do differently?: Try to kick the pace every other mile. Think of it as run, faster-run intervals on 8-10 minutes and see how I do. That'll be my half-marathon strategy for "next time" :) Post race
Event comments: Love this race, but don't think I need to do it again. I think smaller Half Ironman races where there are Athena distinctions would be more fun. Besides, how many times can I cheer on Andy and Chrissie... they so rocked the Pro's M/F overalls! Wow. Last updated: 2010-08-21 12:00 AM

Pre-race pasta: very good
Tent setup at Gunstock: good
Rain at 2:40am while in the tent: not-so-good
I don't mind rain on race day, but on the night before, it's a bummer...esp while camping. Anyway, I woke up too early, hear my campsite buddy Jim awake even earlier, so we drove off to the race site. The "back way" route helped and our later arrival had us miss most of the traffic. I still somehow got a good parking spot. Yay! Could this be my lucky day??
I went for a short run to test my busted feeling left pinky toe. Yup, it hurt, but not drastically. I then went for swim, decided the water was good, and went back to the beach to chat with teammates and friends Roz and Morgan.
Also met a nice lady from Michigan, who apparentely was "bored" with Steelhead, so decided to give herself a tri-getaway for Timberman. Smart idea, and very nice lady -- pretty sure I passed her on the bike somewhere.
Overall I felt ready and actually kinda good about starting last. It just meant that I had more people to pass. :-)
