Swim
Comments: My goal was about a 1:42 min pace. I felt good during the swim- passed one guy, but was quickly passed by two 15 year olds or something. They just flew right by?! Just kept my gameplan pace going though and didn't try to speed up. What would you do differently?: I could've increased my pace on the last 100 since I was still able to breathe every other breath. Transition 1
Comments: I had a very difficult time putting on my tri shirt since I didn't dry off my back with the towel very well. This slowed me down big time and I wasn't prepared for this difficulty. Other than that everything went as planned. Oh, yeah - almost forgot to put my helmet on as I was getting the bike off the rack! What would you do differently?: Maybe I'll swim with my shirt next time- I'll have to check how it feels swimming in it. Or have it rolled up in some sort of way that would help get it on a lot faster. Bike
Comments: This was my weakest event - based on the average speed I rode (17.4 mph). I can usually keep an 18 mph pace but was slower today. I ride an older road bike without any clip-on shoes or strap-on cage. I ride with my running shoes right now since it's my first race and I didn't think I needed to get serious or fancy with that gear. I did pass a few people, but was passed by guys on the smooth tri bikes. I did notice a couple times that I could pass some guys on the nice tri bikes up a couple hills. It all comes down to the individual I guess. What would you do differently?: I'm going to try at least getting clip-on shoes/pedals first and see how that works for me. Eventually I want to get a tri bike. The only thing I'd do differently is push myself harder. I let myself downshift more than I practiced on some hills instead of working harder to maintain a faster pace. Transition 2
Comments: Did well here. Very simple to jog the bike to the rack, rack bike, remove helmet, then run since I was wearing my running shoes during the bike ride. What would you do differently?: I actually could've run a lot faster during transition; but I am happy overall with how I did. Run
Comments: I had my calves cramp up bad as I started to run out of transition. I almost stopped to stretch them out. I immediately slowed down and they felt better. At the mile 1 marker I saw a little over 7 minutes so I felt I going at a decent pace. I basically tried to keep this pace so that my legs wouldn't cramp again. Last mile, I increased pace a little since I felt good. I've practiced a few bricks, and never had my lower legs cramp up like this. Not sure- hydration issue? I drank a whole bottle during the bike. Lack of carbs? I took a Gu on the mile 9 ish on the bike to get myself some carbs for the run, so not sure about the cramp problem. What would you do differently?: Overall I am very happy with my run. I could've run a little faster without the initial leg cramps, but considering it's my first tri and I didn't know what to expect- I like it! Post race
Warm down: Drank some water and tried a few juice drinks. Mild stretching of my legs. My wife and kids greeted me and we had a couple pancakes. What limited your ability to perform faster: Bike speed- caused by: me? equipment? Probably both. Happy with my overall performance though. Event comments: Overall my goal for my first tri was to just have fun and try to do my best! (Since I like a numerical goal, my secondary one was to beat 1:15:00.) I had a great time and accomplished both of these! I'll be back next year for sure. My boys want to do the kids race on Saturday next year as well. Last updated: 2010-08-23 12:00 AM

Ate banana and protein/water mix. Rode to the natatorium and set up my bike and gear in transition. This was my first tri so I just trying to keep things simple. After I went in to get my timing chip, I went back out to transition (in the dark) and was planning on making sure I knew where to go for the bike and run transitions. Went to the row I thought I racked my bike and I couldn't find my it. I looked around at the nearby rows for about 10 minutes and still counldn't locate my bike! Found myself looking through every row-trying to look nonchalant, like I was just seeing what everyone else might be doing. I think whoever saw me thought I was looking for stuff to steal or something. Felt very stupid. Finally found my bike - it was farther down than I remembered putting it. Mental note: "3 rows from the end. Don't forget!" I'm am very glad I went out to transition again before the race to make sure I knew where I'd be going! T1 would've been about as long as my run!
Rode about 2 miles to the race on my bike and did 100 yd warmup swim.
