Swim
Comments: Shallow, nasty, brown water. We swam clockwise rather than counter-clockwise which was detrimental to my left-sided breathing. I wasn't really prepared for the incidental kicking and bumping but you can't blame anyone due to the lack of vision in the murky water. I never really got my stroke in a groove- I was glad when the swim was over. What would you do differently?: Practice more open water swimming. Transition 1
Comments: Ankle felt really bad coming off the beach. Was limited to a fast walk. The elastic shoe laces worked really well. Didn't wear a shirt, just kept tri shorts on and went. Bike
Comments: I really thought I did much better in the bike portion before I saw the splits. The course was nice. Three 3+ mile loops and the roads are much better than what I train on. What would you do differently?: I've only had my road bike for a month (and it is a cheapy) so hopefully I see better results in future races. I was getting flats almost every time I took the bike out so I switched to kevlar tires a few days before the race. I thought about putting the flats back on just for the race (the kevlars do slow me down a bit) but didn't want to risk it. Transition 2
Comments: still walking.. Run
Comments: Had to get mentally prepared for the run more than anything. Surprisingly I found my groove pretty quickly. I was only putting about 20-25% of my weight on my left leg/ankle- my right knee didn't appreciate this very much. I tried to stay out of the way and let people pass me- which they did it great numbers. Just before the turn-around point there was a volunteer saying it was 1/4 mile away, in reality it was about 75 yards, so that was a pleasant surprise. What would you do differently?: It would have been nice to have two healthy ankles and train a bit. Wasn't really tired at the end due to my slow pace. Post race
Warm down: Excellent. Plenty of food, drinks, etc. Didn't stick around for the award ceremony but D&Q certainly know how to put on an efficient event. What limited your ability to perform faster: Ankle and lake conditions. Event comments: The perfect length for a first timer but the lake conditions will keep me from coming back to this event. In total I probably could have shaved off 4-4:30 if I was healthy- but who is ever 100% healthy. The event was run extremely well- can't wait until my next race. Last updated: 2010-08-24 12:00 AM

This was my first triathlon. I sprained my ankle about 3 weeks prior during a soccer game- so training was limited to biking and swimming for the past few weeks. I read some reviews from 2009 about this race and was NOT looking forward to the lake (I'm a bit squeamish when it comes to swimming in geese feces).
Not much of a warm-up, just some stretching. I still wasn't sure how my ankle would respond since I hadn't tested it for a few weeks.
