Pre-race routine:

Was in the area on Saturday so picked up packet and got to take a look at things in the light. Rear tire not holding pressure Saturday night while packing. This has been a slow leak for a month. Changed the tube and found the tiny sliver of metal stuck in the tire causing the problem. Morning of - up about 45 min. before departure time. Showered, finished packing car and prepaired breakfast. Had a egg sandwich and coffee in the car. Arrived about 5:45, few others were arriving too
Event warmup:

Walked a couple blocks to transition zone and dropped my bag. Rode my bike a bit to make sure my tire was still in good shape (this was my first tire change I've ever done) Set up transition, did a little jog around the block, light stretching and visiting and lots of trips to the bathroom since the line was relatively short. Went to do a final check on transition now that more people had arrived. People across from me were handle bar racking - I needed rearrange accordingly. Left the area about 7:00. Had a Gataraid prime and Cliff bar. Wondered over to start area about 7:15

Comments:

Easy run. Went out hard, felt like cross country race from 20 years ago. I felt that I might be in big trouble when at the mile mark I looked down and saw 7:15 on my watch - I don't run that fast. I was hoping to be 8-8:30. Well I started it, should see if I could finish it. Was able to keep going and feel relatively comfortable. I ran with my full finger bike gloves. Didn't bother with taking any water.
What would you do differently?:

I think I did what I needed to do. Estatic on my time and effort level felt.
Transition 1

Comments:

Fine transition. My mounting of the bike is not very good but was about as good as my skills are right now
What would you do differently?:

need to work on my mounting

Comments:

Awsome race for me. Again, concerned at my speed and my ability to maintain it. But it felt ok, so I went with it. About mile 8 started the down pour rain. So glad I had long sleeve shirt and long fingered gloves. Rain stopped with about 2 miles left. Couldn't see very well, glasses were fogging and splattered with rain. I don't really remember details - I just tried to keep pace.
What would you do differently?:

This was my best performance to date - happy with my performance
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

T2 a bit slow as compared to others. Again, skill level of dismount is not good, did about as well as I'm able. Did stumble off the bike, but didn't cause much problems
What would you do differently?:

Practice dismount

Comments:

Feet were frozen and legs were bright red. Had a hard time gauging my speed. Held off looking at my watch until I hit mile one, 8:15. Good, could have been 12 minutes for all I could tell. As I warmed up, pace came up - I had gone too far to slow down now. Didn't bother with water again. Was able to kick it down the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Did what I needed to do. Pushed it when I needed to.
Post race
Warm down:

Quickely got my pants and jacket from transition so not to get chilled. The pine tree I was under turned out to be a help then a hinder as I had thought when I originally saw my spot - Think it kept my stuff much dryer.

Ate some food, checked in with home, visited with my cousins, found the results posted, saw some of the awards then packed up and headed home. Hot shower and chicken noodle soup - all good!

Event comments:

Enjoyed the race. Well run, cources well marked, plenty of post food. Weather - well can't control that.
