Pre-race routine:

40 min wake-up before departure at 4:30. Shower, last minute packing/cooler set-up. Egg sandwich w/ham at home, coffee for the ride. Pick up friend who is competing as well. Easy drive, hazy morning - very high humidity
Event warmup:

Arrive, easy parking and dosed ourselves with bug spray. Plenty of time for packet pick-up & transition set-up. We debated back and forth about wet-suits, decided to use them.

Drank a Gateraid Prime at little after 6:15 and ate 1/2 a cliff bar. Determined in's and out's and checked through things and head to the starting area to check out the swim area

Comments:

Started us every 5 sec., I passed one person before we hit the water and another at about knee deep water. I must have stepped off the mats during the start, my right big toe felt like I rubbed it on the concrete. Water was murkey and I was surprised to swim through loose floating packs of weeds. I hit numerous patches but swam through them and tried not to let it bother me. One arm stroke was hanging with weeds as well as my head when I went for a breath. There were weeds growing up from the bottom, some were up to the surface. I think the wet suit made going through that stuff easier. Passed tons of people. Stayed on course very well, don't think I added any distance.
What would you do differently?:

I think I did about as good as I could have done. Maybe a stroke or two more before standing up. I wanted to try to push myself hard - I think I have held back in past races based on my half iron swim rate.

Very pleased, a good 30 sec. before the next women swimmer
Transition 1
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

Good pace out of the water and to my bike. Feet stuck in wetsuit, again. Going for no socks this time, does cut down the time. Didn't bother with any leg drying, only my face. Helmet and glasses on easially. Good size hill to run up before we hit the mat. Horable getting on my bike. Peddle wasn't in the right location and I had to do a lot of readjusting
What would you do differently?:

I think I need to get the wetsuit down further before I do the step on it and pull the other leg up. I have short legs and I think that may be my problem, I run out of stroke before I really get to my heal and should slide the the thing off.
Need to start working on my bike mounting. It was pathetic.

Comments:

Great ride, definately a PR. Lost ground on some people going down hills. I think I may need to do some handle bar adjustments as I'm a more aggressive biker then I use to be. Did pretty good getting fluids in throughout the ride
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on my mounting and dismounting. Right now still need to start and stop from a non-moving bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

Had to run down a steep paved hill. A "good" wake up for the legs. Kind of slippery, took more caution then I would have liked
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on flying dismounts. That complete stop stuff is a killer

Comments:

Boo. I knew I was moving slow out of transition, probably the effect of the fast bike ride. Took me too long to get myself moving. I did finally kick it in, but too late. Missed first by a minute & 9 seconds. All I needed to do was run a little better then an 8.5 min mile. I've done that in previous races this year, but I guess it is what it is - that's how I ran during this race
What would you do differently?:

My weakest area. I just need to run more, train more in the area.
Post race
Warm down:

Got myself a water and decided to look at my foot since my big toe still felt kind of wierd.
Yep, cut open that toe. Small cut, but it will be a pain to heal.
Went up the course to wait for my friend.
After Amy finished, got some fruit and chocolate milk - just didn't feel like pancakes.
Gave the first aid station something to do - figured they would do a better job cleaning my cut then I would and the sooner I can get all the bacteria cleaned out of it the better.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I pushed myself harder in the swim and bike then I think I have in previous races - probably had some affect on my run performance. I'll just have to figure out how to get better in that run portion, cause I don't want to slow down my swim or bike.
Transitions on and off the bike really need some work.

Event comments:

A really nice race and a fun morning. Easy to get to, straight forward courses with good distances and variety. Alway knew where to go and intersections were well managed.
Organizers kept things moving and were well supplied with food and bathrooms. Definately on my list to do again

Wahoo. Pushed hard, effort maybe at 6 or 7? Remained comfortable. Towards the end I had to talk myself down a bit, heart rate going up a bit more then it should
Wind: None
Course: Mix of hills. Some short and rolling. A really steep one and a couple long but graduals. Really enjoyable, a really good course. Storms the night before had knocked down a lot of trees, branches and leaves. Spots of the road were a mess, but based on what I saw on the side of the road, they did a great job getting it as clean as they could
