Age Group Rank = 6/14
Event warmup:

10min jog and complete stretch
6min swim
Swim
  • 30m 57s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 04s / 100 meters
Comments:

I sucked on the swim
What would you do differently?:

Focus more on continuing to breath bilaterally allowing for me to get into a grove that would make me sight in time with the waves so that I could effectively see the bouys and stay on course.
Transition 1
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

I was happy with this transition as I was able to effectively get out of my suit and into my shoes quickly.
There was a run up from the water which I was one of the fastest on the day allowing my legs to losen up getting ready for the ride which was nice as well.
What would you do differently?:

I will be purchasing tri shoes so that I can have them preclipped as right now I am using mountain bike clip ons and this forces me to put my shoes on in transition rather than while on the bike.
Bike
  • 1h 17m 14s
  • 40 kms
  • 31.07 km/hr
Comments:

Usually this will suit me quite well as I have strong legs and good technique but I am using an older road bike so going down the hills I was unable to keep speed with the faster TT bikes. I would pass quite a few people going up but then be passed on the flats and going down.
What would you do differently?:

I would concentrate on keeping a lower cadence (around 92-93 instead of 97-98) on the flats so that I could continue to push hard and not lose time to the lighter bikes. I have strong enough legs to do this I often get sidetracked with the thoughts of saving something for the end which I don't need to do as much.
Transition 2
  • 00m 39s
Comments:

This transition went fairly well. I was able to quickly get my shoes off and runners on with little trouble. I then took my helmet off and took off on the run.
What would you do differently?:

As mentioned in the T1 comments, I will be getting proper Tri shoes which will allow me to get my shoes off while still riding and then I will be able to quickly switch into the runners and take off even faster.
Run
  • 38m 59s
  • 10 kms
  • 03m 54s  min/km
Comments:

I love to run. I tried to push my pace each KM and go sub40. The course made this a little easier as it was flat but I was pretty heppy with my time by going sub 39min.
What would you do differently?:

At the 5th and 6th km's I allowed myself to recover a little running 4min and 4:03 respectively which I did not need to do. Next time I will remember that I am a strong runner and will continue to push the pace until I cross the line.
Post race
Warm down:

Nice long stretch -- should have done an easy jog though.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was unable to swim effectively which hurt my time and my motivation. The first half of the bike I was thinking about the poor swim which is bad. I should have just forgotten about it and pushed on the peddals.

Event comments:

As I crossed the finish line John Salt was standing right there and looked me square in the eye, gave me a nice firm handshake and said "Good Race". That was pretty cool. Very personal and makes me want to race MSC again.

Swimming

Age Group: 0/14
Overall: 106/300
Performance:
Suit: Wet Suit
Course: Triangle Course with 2 left turns. The course was well marked but the choppiness of Lake Ontario made it difficult for me to sight properly and I ended up going well off course adding a significant amount of distance to my swim. I'm usually at 28:30 1500m swimmer but this was a particularily bad swim.

Course: Very flat and a few turns but nothing really of any challenge. Aid stations were frequent enough that staying hydrated was not an issue. I enjoy the 2X5Km loop course because this gives an opportunity to run by the crowd which always gets the adrenalin going.
