Swim
Comments: I felt comfortable on the swim. I did a little more swim training this summer compared to last summer and was about 30 seconds faster over the short distance. I also got out of the pool feeling OK. Transition 1
Comments: I felt like I had a goo T1. I was certainly fast relative to the field - 31st overall. I had my shoes in a good position and was able to slip right into them. Bike
Comments: I felt OK on the bike. My thighs were burning though. I kept telling myself that I had to keep going. The course is short so no need to save anything for the run. I have two "rivals". A couple of women who are in my AG were in my wave. Last year we came 1,2,3 in our AG (me in 3rd). One of these women got out of the pool about 30 seconds ahead of me. I kept her in my sights. The other woman is usually faster than me on the bike and she got out of the pool about 30 seconds behind me. So I had a carrot in front of me and someone chasing me down. Talk about pressure LOL. I passed the first girl on the way back to T2 but she went flying by me before we actually got to T2. What would you do differently?: Not a whole lot. I was about 90 seconds faster than last year. I was really pleased with my bike split. Transition 2
Comments: Had a bit of trouble getting bike shoes off but managed OK. I ran in the wrong direction to get out of T2. Stupid. Run
Comments: So, I head into the run in 2nd place. Still have one ahead and one right behind me. I could tell almost immediately that I was going ever so much faster than the first woman. I didn't want to blow out so I just took my time. When we got to a dog leg in the trail I could see my friend a little further back than the first time I saw her. I felt strong so I figured I might stay ahead of her. The next thing I know, the other woman stops to tie her shoe. She tells me to go on ahead. OK! I picked up the pace and ran my heart out. Once I hit the lead, there was no way I was going to give it up. I ran hard for me but with enough left in the tank that I could pick up the pace a bit more if challenged. At the turn around, I realized I wasn't going to be challenged. I came in ahead of the other two girls quite comfortably. Post race
Warm down: None. Event comments: Unbeknown to me, my solid performance not only had me first in my AG, but 2nd female overall. I have never felt so elated after a race. I had to wait several agonizing hours to find out if any unknown person had been put in a later wave. Fortunately not. I felt like a celebrity afterwards LOL. You can probably tell I don't get O/A awards very often so this was a huge buzz. I am so totally proud of my performance and the effort I put in - especially on the run. What a great day. Up at 5 AM, toast, coffee and then into the car. I broke the cardinal rule of race preparation and put my bike in the car the day before. I usually park in the garage but didn't want to wake up my youngest on the way out. Bike and car were both in tact!
It was freezing - the day's high was 87 but it was only in the low 50s when I was getting ready. I had to put the signs up on the bike racks when I got to the race so that was my warm-up. I wasn't feeling great, especially after walking into the rest rooms and seeing that someone had had a nasty accident in one of the stalls :( I was actually gagging when I walked out onto the pool deck! The event was a few minutes late starting so my 7:10 wave was probably closer to 7:20. I ended up getting my towel and wrapping it around me to try to keep warm. No official warmup.
