Swim
Comments: Being the 5th oldest guy at 50 competing against some stud police and FBI dudes.... I felt good. What would you do differently?: Get to the front of the swim even more and then hold my position. Transition 1
Comments: Hard to say what happened here as the run to the swim was part of the transition. I dont use socks, and have powder in my tri bike shoes. My transition to get out of the rack is no more than 30 seconds. I would suggest to others that even though your heart rate is high and the temptation is to relax a bit, do the relaxing on the bike for the first few miles. Get going and the time you save by a quick transition is time you can relax on the bike. The stopping is what hurts you. Bike
What would you do differently?: Forgot to check that my gear at the start was an easy one. Stupid rookie mistake especially with the entrance ramp little hill to start. Transition 2
Comments: We were in the dark when we racked the bikes. When we came back, it was sunny and everything looked different. I would have practiced finding my bike one more time in the morning just to be sure. Run
Comments: I decided on this race that I would allow the pain monkey to have a big stick. I also told myself that I would have this pain to see if I would die. I did not!. The first three miles were painful. I was running at at 8:40 pace and walking the water stops. However, I was passing all types of walkers. That gave me the reinforcement that I was doing something right on the bike. The last three miles I was running at a 7:50 pace and it felt like I could do much more. As a matter of fact, a good friend of mine that also was in this wave, I found out was only 45 seconds ahead of me and if only I would have known.... he is also 12 years younger so that feels good :) What would you do differently?: Push it even harder after mile 2. But, woulduv shoulduv coulduv...... it is always easier to critique. Post race
Warm down: The kids with the ice bath over the head was fantastic and it gave me a head rush. The run through the end chute with the crowd was great. I even got comments like from some kid telling his dad "see dad, that guy is old like you and he is running fast!" and "wow, he did the swim and bike and he is still running!" I have good ears. Possibly only a dream? Event comments: I like the venue, but as usual, the crappy way to rack the bikes so early in the morning and then the wait is something that turns me off to this race. There are so many smaller events that have the setup better. I do like the chicago crowd and it being my town, I like it. Last updated: 2010-09-01 12:00 AM

My wife and I stayed at a hotel in the Loop thinking that it would save me some sleep. However, she volunteered and needed to be at the body marking at 4:15 so I went with her to rack my bike in the dark.
I made it a point to not over eat. I ate a bagle with peanut butter, one ensure and a bananna. I also hydrated well. I wanted to make sure that I did not take on too many calories prior to the race. I have three separate bags for a tri. The first is what I am going to put on as I go the the event. The second is my wetsuit and cap, and goggles and a disposable bottle with 1/2 full of my infinite formula for 15 before the race. The third is a bag with all of my bike and run stuff. This works good.
No freaking way to warm up except sweat in the already 80 degree heat and walk 1/2 mile to the swim start. I was not in my age group as a friend invited me to be with the first responders this year. I was honored to be with them but looking at the group, I was the 5th oldest guy out of 120! We all started as the 3rd wave of the swim so this was a huge advantage. If I would have gone off at my regular time, it would have been 1.5 hours more.
