Pre-race routine:

Stayed at the Red Roof Inn which was about a half mile from transition. Woke up at 4am and left the hotel at about 4:45 to bike down to trasition. Got everything set and then walked down to the swim area and meet up with Marla and Jolene. Took until 5:15 or so to get set up,3/4 mile walk to the swim start and arrived there at about 5:40. Pretty much perfect timing as my gun went off at 6:24am.
Event warmup:

Shoot the shit with Marla and Jolene
Swim
  • 18m 54s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 18s / 100 yards
Comments:

Start of the swim was definitely a boxing match! Hands, feet, bodies, everywhere... Took a little while to catch a rhythm but after 100 it went pretty well. Breathing was a little difficult at I still had a cold and didn't feel like I was fully exhaling. The exit on the stairs was interesting as you are a little disorientated for a second. Goggles were good and didn't fog which was a bonus over Pleasant Prairie. Noticed a tear in my wetsuit moments prior to putting on the suit which was a bummer...time to patch it and see if it is salvagable.
What would you do differently?:

Train a little more on speed...
Transition 1
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

HUGE transition area...ran past my bike by about 5 yards and had to run back. A little shocked on my T1 time as I thought it would have been about 1:30. Other than running by the bike it went pretty smooth. Took wetsuit off on the run to T1 which was nice.
What would you do differently?:

Find bike better. Not sure how but when you leave transition at 5:20, it looks completely different after everyone is in...maybe stay in transition until 5:45?
Bike
  • 37m 10s
  • 13.67 miles
  • 22.07 mile/hr
Comments:

Good bike. This was fun as I was doing nothing but passing people! Was wondering if I just had that bad of a swim or what but didn't really care as I must have passed 100 - 125 people.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe rent race wheels? I had them reserved but canceled them when I got sick to save the money.
Transition 2
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

Again....transition is HUGE! Hardest part is finding a clear route where people aren't walking or standing in the way.
What would you do differently?:

Taken a clearer route to my spot on the rack.
Run
  • 21m 13s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Decent run...negative thoughts held me back a little. Not sure if it was because of my cold or what but a little worried about bonking on the run so kept a steady pace through mile two and kicked it for the last .5 mile. I was happy with the fact that again, all I did was pass people and NO ONE passed me.

What would you do differently?:

run harder....had some left in the tank for sure.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, Gatorade and hugs with Marla.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

COLD...lungs felt like they had a cat in them and the snot was definitely running down my throat.

Event comments:

My goal coming into this race was to make the top 10 in my age group and I ended up 10th!
Overall, it wasn't as good of a race as Pleasant Prairie but I was happy with it. The best part of it, even over taking 10th, was that after the swim I passes a ton of people and NO ONE PASSED ME in the bike or run!

Swimming
00:18:54 | 820 yards | 02m 18s / 100yards
Age Group: 0/382
Overall: 615/2285
Performance: Good
Suit: DeSoto T1 two piece
Course: Straight swim from south to north along the shore in about 8 - 14 feet of water. Stairs into the water and stairs out...tread water start. Nice clean water and straight swim was nice but the 450 yard run to transition was considered part of the swim time....should have been part of the transition time in my mind.
