Pre-race routine:

Up at around 5am and I had my normal breakfast of a banana & strawberry smoothy with toast and at 5:30, Lori and I headed off. We arrived in Elwood at around 6:45am and I racked my bike and was all ready with PLENTY of time. I then realised that my start wave was 44 mins after the first wave so had even more time. Spent the 1 1/2 hour wait just walking around and watching the swimmers from the Active Feet struggle through the choppy conditions.
Event warmup:

I went for a swim around 15 mins prior to my start to get used to the water temperature and the choppy water. Good to get a feel for it.
Swim
  • 12m 49s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 34s / 100 meters
Comments:

Holy cow was it choppy. 1m wind chop made it pretty difficult swim. I copped a couple of big mouthfuls of water and the waves made it a necessity to take my time and check my direction.
I stopped a couple of times to re-orientate myself and catch my breath. I lost some time while doing breast stroke but think it was necessary.
What would you do differently?:

Hopefully it won't be that windy / choppy again, but if it is, I will try to push through it without stopping.
Transition 1
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

I was a little out of breath from the swim during the run to T1. My wetsuit string got caught and made it a little difficult to get unzipped but still managed to have my top half off well before I got to my bike.
I got my helmet on right away, which was good as the second my wetsuit was off I was able to shoot off with my bike!
What would you do differently?:

Run harder. You can "rest" on the bike!

Also, I might look into options to have shoes tied up to stay horizontal and make it easier to get on bike.
Bike
  • 38m 59s
  • 20 kms
  • 30.78 km/hr
Comments:

Nice tailwind on return was good for a bit of a rest, although I really tried to push hard on downwind sections. The headwind really slowed me down at times (i.e. 17km/h)
What would you do differently?:

Try to use a higher gear, push harder and increase my cadence. This will hopefully increase my average speed. This may be difficult but might be worth trying.
Transition 2
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

I felt like it took a little longer to lace up my shoes than normal, but I still think it was a good transition.
What would you do differently?:

Elastic laces would help
Run
  • 24m 39s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 56s  min/km
Comments:

I tried to push a little harder than the first Tri a few weeks ago and managed to set a slightly quicker pace. I grabbed some water to drink and poured some over me to cool down which was a good help.
I tried to keep up with a few people I that had passed me along the way and managed ok but still lost time.
I felt that the run was my worst part of the race, but realistically I think I did ok!
What would you do differently?:

Try to start the run at a quicker pace and hold it for the race. This may not be possible for the next race as it is an Olympic distance and I'm not sure how I will go on this?
Post race
Warm down:

Very little.... walked around and re-hydrated with some Gatorade. Lori was happy and proud of me which made me happy!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall fitness / my bike (not a Tri bike) / the Weather (too windy for the swim & bike to go really quick)

Event comments:

Great event... I'm looking forward (and also nervous) to the Sandringham Olympic Distance race after the New Year!
