![]() Run
Comments: The minute I started; I was hungry. I knew I had made a pretty significant mistake by not eating enough. I haven't had time to train as much as I wanted for this race but I knew about nutrition. The first aid station was around a half mile; I took a GU and ate it right away. But 100 calories weren't going to get me too far. At the next aid station I took another GU and drank some Gatorade. I have never drank Gatorade while running before but was worried about not having the energy. I ended up eating 3 GU's total and drank probably 3 cups of Gatorade. I also took water whenever I could. Around mile 9 I was cramping and I felt a little nauseous. I decided to just finish without anything else. I felt pretty good otherwise. Just after mile 11 things changed. While I was breathing fine; I just felt like I couldn't lift my legs and continue running. I walked a lot and while I wasn't walking I was doing a slow jog/shuffle. The last 2 miles I averaged 13.48 and 14.11m/mile. When I was finished I really felt like I couldn't run another step. Besides all that; I actually felt pretty good about the run. I've come a long way. What would you do differently?: Eat breakfast! ![]() Post race
Warm down: I walked around very slowly and stretched. I really felt like I could barely lift my legs. I met up with my nephew and his grandfather and went to get lunch. I could not sit down and eat. Every time I stopped walking or tried to sit I was cramping in my legs. I walked around for at least 30 minutes before my feet felt ok. What limited your ability to perform faster: Train more, eat more and get my foot/heel looked at. Event comments: It was a beautiful day so lots of people were out on the boardwalk. Unfortunately many of them didn't know there was a race going on and wandered and just stood in the race lane. The organizers did have cones set up and as long as you paid attention it wasn't a problem. The roads were not closed but a large running area was separated with cones and there were many cops around stopping traffic at the cross streets. Good signage and clear mile markers. Since it was a relay there were a lot of people around waiting for their turn to run. They were cheering and being very supportive. I've never done a half or full marathon before; only 5K's so I don't really have much to compare it to but I thought for the price; it was good. Not much going on at the finish line. You could grab a banana, bagel and water. But we finished pretty late and didn't go to the afterparty at Wonderbar. Last updated: 2010-09-05 12:00 AM

I was part of a relay team. I was running half and my sister in law ran the other half. The course is 8 laps. The first lap was shorter than the other 7 so I ended up running around 12.97 miles per my Garmin
I woke up late and did not eat enough breakfast. I had a small bowl of cereal and figured I would eat more when I got there. I ended up not eating anything else before the race which was obviously a mistake. I think I was nervous so I didn't feel hungry and just forgot.
I realized my mistake pretty quickly though.
I didn't really warm up. I knew I would be running very slow so I figured I would use the first couple miles as a warm up. I have had a lot of heel pain over the last several weeks and could not run much. My goal was really just to finish.
