Pre-race routine:

Got to race early...like 4:45 early...couldn't sleep...think I was having anxiety about the pouring rain. It did stop while I set up transition, but I still put my bike stuff in plastic bag, and my run stuff in one too. Also put tri bag in big garbage bag.

Got an end spot, right by bike out/run out, but that didn't matter...cause it's Lake Geneva, and people put all their shit wherever they want...see T1 notes.

Went back to car since I was done setting up at 5:04...listened to some tunes...had breakfast and relaxed.

Called DJ and waited for him to get there with my Donkey jersey that I was VERY happy to wear.
Event warmup:

Swim around in lake with DJ for awhile...it was warmer in the water than it was on the beach.

Time off from last year: +0:44 (BOOO)

So, while waiting on the beach, I saw the waves ahead of me go off, and saw that A LOT of people chose to walk this, so because of that, I wanted to be on of the first in my wave to start so I didn't get behind any of that. That had it's advantages and it's disadvantages. I swam pretty well until I caught the wave ahead of me, and it was almost like a traffic jam to get around the buoy to turn and head back in. I got hit in the chest, and it hurt, so my breathing got all elevated and I was "stuck" in between a couple people and had a hard time breaking free.
What would you do differently?:

There isn't much you can do differently. Water is shallow. Not a lot of room to move around that turn since it was pretty close to pier.

I pray my swim is more consistent next year. I should have been able to do this in 5 minutes. 7:31 is absolutely atrocious.

So, being that this is a Frank Dobbs race...so like I said above, I got to transition early, and got a coveted end spot, BUT, as I ripped off my wetsuit and got my shoes and helmet on, and started to run with my bike, I noticed that there were about 5 bikes/transition areas that people had set up blocking my run to the bike out (there is a big ass sand pit to the left, and I didn't want to run in their with my bike shoes). So, I just kind of lifted up Betty and jumped over their stuff. I was able to do this in between two bikes, because even though they were technically breaking the rules by putting their stuff outside of the transition ropes, I didn't want to knock over their bikes. We also had to go through puddles and lots of mud on the way out, so I was being extra careful not to get too much of that stuff in my cleats.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.

I had another hard time getting into my bike pedals again today...think it's my cleat...will have that looked at.

That was the LEAST of my problems out there on the bike though...

About 2.5 miles in, we cross over diaganal train tracks, and I could see the cops up there, with some people who looked like they had wiped out, but about 3 feet in front of the tracks, one of the cops yelled for me to get off, and that was too late...I tried going over, and totally wiped out. Instead of asking me if I was ok, she yells, "I told you to get off your bike!" Really??? I was going 20 mph, and if I would have braked, I could have caused someone else behind me to crash into me, or still have fallen regardless because I would have had to slam on my brakes. All the athletes around me were really nice and asked if I was ok. Which was nicer than the mean cop. I hopped back on and pedaled away...ego bruised...knee totally bleeding...shoulder all scratched, and my left hip feeling like I just had a baseball bat taken to it.

I did get a tad rattled and felt like I would start crying, but I just took a couple deep breaths and sucked it up and tried to go as fast as I could for the rest of it, being really cautious over the next 2 sets of tracks and around the turns.

What REALLY cheered me up was seeing the 3 DONKEYS on one of the farms...I started cracking up and yelled out DONKEYS!!! I think the girl who I passed thought I was insane..but I didn't care...it made me feel better.

I REALLY was hoping for a time closer to 55 minutes, or even under, but under the circumstances and the conditions, I am happy with this.
What would you do differently?:

Get off my bike so I don't wipe out.

I didn't take my feet out, because there are some gravely stones when you first come in from the street, and I was already in pain, and didn't want to be in any more.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.

My goal was to RUN the entire killer hill, and I did. Even though it hurt...I did it. Even though my feet were TOTALLY numb from the bike (cold, wet), I didn't walk any party of it. My breathing felt really tight...could have still been leftover sickness from the cold.

Time up: 15:22
Time down: 12:19
What would you do differently?:

If I wasn't in pain, I could have done this faster. My knee and hip were really hurting.
Post race
Warm down:

This section should actually be titled WARM UP description since I was ABSOLUTELY freezing after I finished. I was soaking wet...bleeding...and just wanted to get in dry clothes.

I went to the med tent...they said I was like the 75th person they had seen already today.

Got leg all cleaned up and wraped up....in a nice pretty purple wrap just to make DJ cringe (Vikings color).

Found the donks...chatted...then told them I was out of there...wanted to go back to my aunt/uncle's and get warm, and go out to breakfast before it was time to head up to Madtown!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Wipe out.

Event comments:

Like that so many people I know were up there...
Didn't like the fall...
Or the mean cop....

Next year...I am breaking 1:30...since that was what I was shooting for this year! :)
