Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:00, had a chocolate chip muffin, water and green tea. Left at 4:30 for the 45 minute drive to Fontana. Parked at the church which was NOT 1/3 of a mile from the start. More like a mile. There were 2 gates into the transition area and the one to the north had a huge line. I entered the west gate really quick and got a good spot. Overall, the area was a free for all. Then it poured up until swim time so all my gear was wet, even my "waterproof" stuff.
Event warmup:

None really, unless you count shivering under a tree while it poured. Finally felt better with my wetsuit on and waded a bit in the shallow water.
Swim
  • 06m 57s
  • 580 yards
  • 01m 12s / 100 yards
Comments:

They started us in waves of 50 and the water was so shallow a lot of people were walking. The turn around buoy was tight against a pier and I walked that part, then found clear water for a good swim back.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. The course was what it was and we were grouped by number, so it was luck of the draw.
Transition 1
  • 03m 32s
Comments:

Only my second tri, but a big improvement for me. I was a long way from the bike out so that added some time.
What would you do differently?:

Practice, practice, practice.
Bike
  • 1h 00m 32s
  • 18.6 miles
  • 18.44 mile/hr
Comments:

The mount area right out of T1 was a joke. They had orange cones for our bike lane that could handle maybe 2 bikes at a time, but there were too many people trying to mount up and clip in. The roads were very wet but I had no rain when I was out on the course. People were being cautious around the turns and giving wide berths. Saw quite a few wipeouts. They stopped us at the RR tracks about 2 miles in to walk across them as they were very slippery. There was a huge crash when I went by with a guy in the ditch and a wrecked bike. Plenty a marshalls there waving flags to dismount and a cop car was also stationed there with its lights flashing.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more on the bike, but I was very happy. Rode my new Cervelo S1 and it was great. Still a little fearful going fast down hills and the wet roads did not help my confidence.
Transition 2
  • 02m 38s
Comments:

Getter better. Everything was soaked so I had trouble getting my socks on. I was close to the bike in, but again had a long run to the run out.

Run
  • 27m 42s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Wow, I admit I walked for about a minute on the hill. Legs just did not want to go and I practice hill running. This hill is a biatch. A women ran by me and told me I could do it (i.e. HTFU), so that inspired me to get going. Felt fine after my walk and it was a little scary coming down the hill in the rain.
What would you do differently?:

More brick workouts. Legs did not want to go that first mile and that was the start of the hill climb.
Post race
Warm down:

Found my wife, gathered my soaked stuff and got to the car. It was still raining and we wanted to get out of there. Mile walk back to church in the rain.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Probably would have went harder on the bike if not for the wet roads. More brick and hill training.

Event comments:

Only my second tri and my first was at LITH in June who put on a great race. Happy with my time and new bike, not used to free for all transition areas. Competitors were great but the event seemed a bit unorganized.
