Swim
Comments: Hopped into pool and goggles instantly filled with water. Having trained in the Navy in similar situations, this didnt distract me from the swim and I did the entire swim with goggles full. Weird feeling but still didnt slow me down. What would you do differently?: BUY NEW GOGGLES. I am not sure of the life span of goggles, but I have been swimming in these for 18 months and though I had taken good care of them, but still not as good as they used to be. Remember to start my watch in the pool for an accurate swim time. Transition 1
Comments: Good T1. Equipment laid out properly and was an easy transition onto the bike. As I was rolling my bike out of T1 I noticed my front tire was VERY low on pressure (this comes back to haunt me). What would you do differently?: T1 was ok so probably just refine gear placement, etc. Bike
Comments: As I was leaving T1, I noticed my front tire was very low on pressure, but didnt want to stop to inflate (was pumped up first thing in the am so I need to inspect tube for slow leak). Road cautiously forst 4 miles but finally gave in and pulled over to quickly inflate tire (THANK GOD I BROUGHT MY CO2 Inflator. I was going to leave it). Once tire was at an adequate pressure, the rolling resistance was significantly reduced and it was easier to ride at a higher speed. Even with hitting voer 25 on a down hill and over 20 across the causeway back to the JCC, I was unable to recover my time. (NOTE: My Garmin states a significant difference when compared to the Granite timing. Again, not a good history with this company). What would you do differently?: Really do a better pre race inspection of equipment. I am not sure what happened to my front wheel, but it seems ok now. Maybe push a little harder on this leg. Did I save myself for the run too much? Hmmmm..... Transition 2
Comments: JCC race volunteer stopped riders at base of T-area and had you "walk" (READ: RUN LIKE THE DEVIL) up a hill into the top of the T-area then back down the hill to the rack. Very odd set up, but not that bad. I ran so hard to the rack I thought I was going to hurl while I was putting on my running shoes. YEAH! Again, T2 time is wrapped up in the bike. Weird. Screwed my time on the bike to say the least. What would you do differently?: Have some water waiting at the T-area. Run
Comments: Again, a good 3.5 miler but I had difficulty breathing due to pollen and HR strap. Once I got that adjused, I was able to run better and had an OK run. What would you do differently?: readjust HR Strap before race. Had washed it earlier and apparently moved the buckle just a little too much. Post race
Warm down: After finish of run walked over to T-area to return Chip Strap. Ran into Joanne and that was an AWESOME surprise. I was so glad to see her out there. What a great lady! Watched for Denise with Joanne and Nikki (Nikki was the runner for Denise) and talked with Brian from Spin class in the city. Walked around, drank water, coveted other peoples bikes, the usual. What limited your ability to perform faster: Had gone for a LSD on Thursday 7.5 in 1:06 and that lasted in my legs longer than I had anticipated, so on race day I wasnt as ready as I would have liked to have been. Equipment ruled the day for my race with goggles (which really didnt slow me down but still sucked), and bike tire issue. Event comments: I love this race as my first of the season, but I have to admit that it is bare bones. You go to race here to get a taste of the sport, see friends and do a quick assessment for the season (see if the winter's training was good). I feel that this race is an awesome way to get into this sport and love to see the first timers here. Thanks to my BT friends and I hope they had as much fun as I did! See you on the course! Got up early and loaded bike onto truck. Drove to Marblhead and got there relatively easily. Had large DD iced coffee, sugarfree Redbull, low fat blue berry muffin breakfast.
Arrived on site at 6:30ish and signed in and set up T-area. Made a few trips back to truck for abstract business and talked to Denise, Darren, Nikki and her son prior to swim start.
