Swim

  • 352 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

very very very VERY crowded swim! tuff to navigate on a confined course like that with so many people trying to do the same thing. i decided prior to the start that i was just going to swim over the top if i had to and actually did that quite a few times. so.....if you were one of those, my apologies!
What would you do differently?:

not too much
Transition 1

where to start?? so the beach is lined chaotically with the later waves of people. there are also four different races going on at one time (super sprint, sprint, olympic and half distances). so T1 is a complete mess. had the wetsuit peeled down past the waist by the time i got to the bike and was stepping out of it and trying to put the helmet on. problem tho was the straps to the helmet were all twisted. oh, and the wetsuit got stuck on my heels. stopped mucking with the helmet, bent down and peeled the wetsuit off and then just threw it onto the T1 mat and let out a resounding nawty word!! tsk tsk tsk. got helmet on, grabbed shark bait and off i go.......thru the wet grass and mud. which of course got into the cleats of the shoes which of course meant that it took a little longer to clip in........did i mention four races at once?? yep and they were yelling at the mount line to stay to the right of the cones........um, ya.LIKE THERE IS ROOM FOR THOUSANDS OF RACERS IN A THREE FOOT WIDE PATH!!! gee'z........
What would you do differently?:

take a freakin shuttle bus from the rack to the mount line.
Bike

Comments:

ok. so miami w#s tells me before the race that there are three sets of railroad tracks that we go over and that the right hand side of each are pretty beat up and bumpy so stick to the center or left side. so got up to speed and cruising along and come up on set #1. get up on the hoods and tell the group im in about the bumpity's and then i see about three people go down up by the tracks.........as we aproach the tracks the volunteer jumps out and starts yelling "walk your bike across the tracks" and is waving his arms like a crazed lunatic. get closer and see the carnage before me and slow down as much as i could, and im over to the left with one guy on my left. as we start crossing the tracks guy on my left for some reason decides to turn RIGHT, which causes me to turn RIGHT as in right into the grove of the track. down goes shark bait with davey on top!! water bottle goes skidding into the other oncoming traffic.......i come to a stop and right away get up and go get my water bottle. initial looksee at everything is ok so i hop back onto shark bait and off i go..........time to make up ground i guess now!
What would you do differently?:

oh i know the answer to this one!!!!! how about..............drink more gatorade?? nope, the right answer is NOT TO CRASH!!! (i think even amyjo got that one right!!!)
Transition 2
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

wet road. downhill. sharp right turn into T2 = no running dismount!!! rack sharkbait, off with shoes, on with the runners, mislaced.....d'oh! helmet off and away i go.......
What would you do differently?:

laced better....didnt go with the toggles for some reason this time, not sure why........
Run
  • 19m 34s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

first half of run is uphill which means second is downhill. worked the uphill, right leg was sore from crash. at the top by the turn around i almost got hit by a car that decided to pass me in the opposite lane. i scared the passenger tho when i slapped that window........really pushed the downhill
What would you do differently?:

pushed the uphill harder........but it is what it is, no wait, how about NOT ALMOST GET HIT BY THE FREAKIN CAR!!! hey good job volunteer on stopping traffic, er, wait, there was no volunteer at the turn around point............
Post race
Warm down:

stretch back and leg, survey damage to legs in turns of road rash (basically none somehow) back out to cheer in teammates

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lets see. 1. wetsuit stuck on ankles, 2. mud in cleats (both those are on me) 3. crash on bike (somewhat me) 4. would pass groups only to have to slow down at the turns so the group caught me again to make sure i was going the right way (four races at once, no volunteers directing traffic at turns, only little signs that said race with an arrow. um, which race turns here???) 5. almost getting hit by a car.

all of those things tho and im still happy with the results. yes i couldve been up further but with everything that happened, i'll take it!!

Event comments:

no volunteers on the bike course, nobody directing traffic at turns. swim start was chaotic with the longer races having to run thru the later waves of people standing on the beach. 3 foot wide coned area to bike in with 3000 of your buddies. post race food sucked (for the cost of the entry i'm sorry, i do expect better) and the awards for age groupers (for the sprint) were the same for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. again, sorry but for the entry fee i do expect better. this is my second race put on by this outfit and if it werent for the other sponsors at the other one i wouldnt have done this one. i will not do another race by this promotion again. absolutely terrible.
