Swim
Comments: After getting warmed up, found a comfortable spot for the start. Stayed toward the back on the inside. As the gun went off, settled in to my pace, focussing on long strokes and relaxing. Soon found myself working up through the pack and got into a good stroke. Spotting was a bit sketchy at first, but got it going as the race progressed. As we made it to the dam, could see more and more yellow caps, was catching the yellow wave. Dug in, each time seeing a group ahead I made a push to join them. Worked very hard on keeping close to the markers and going in a straight line. On the backside of the course, many swimmers went really wide, making their swim even longer. By the finish I was surrounding by yellow caps - looking forward to seeing official results. Bonus: Beat time goal of finishing under 30 minutes! MALE RANKING: 250/942 What would you do differently?: Maybe go a bit harder - could have gone faster, but given first race, wanted to ensure a good finish. Transition 1
Comments: Ran up from the swim, getting wetsuit undone on the run, pulled down and removed cap and goggles. Got to my station, removed wetsuit and toweled off quickly. Slipped socks on and got into bike shoes. Put on my cycling gloves, sunglasses and helmet. Ran bike out of the transition area fumbling with my HR watch to get it secured to my stem. What would you do differently?: Could have gone faster - lost time getting watch set on handlebars. Also probably should leave the gloves or put them on while on the bike. Need to practice getting shoes on while on the bike - save a bit more time. Bike
Comments: Headed out of the park and down 108. Had to keep myself from going to hard early. Settled in and found a good grove, keeping HR in Z3. My first thoughts were just of how many bikes were on the road. Slowly started working my way through the pack, passing several riders. Did not see any early on from my age group. Worked hard up the hills to keep speed up, but found a few frustrating as lots of riders seemed to get bogged down on the hills almost creating traffic jams. Several riders seemed to have issues with the "ride on the right" - but made the best of it and pushed through. Got caught on a few hills getting stuck by other riders, but made it through. Hit the accelerade every 10 - 15 minutes and went through two gels on the course. Legs were starting to feel it around the half way mark but kept pushing on. wanted a strong finish. Hit 47mph on one of the down hills. Did not use the aero bars all the time, but found them helpful on the descents and small hills. Kept playing leap from with a guy with a fancy aero bike and solid back wheel. Finally pushed past him for good on the final hill before turning back onto 108. Drank some water on the final stretched and tried to increase the cadence and back off the gears a bit to prepare for the run. Came zooming into the park and saw my wife and boys cheering on - jumped off the bike and ran back into the transition area. Pretty pumped - my unoffical results show average speed over over 20mph! Got bogged down on a few hills, which more practice will just make better. Transition 2
Comments: Unclipped and ran with bike back to area. Got the bike racked and helmet and gloves off while slipping out of shoes. Slipped into running shoes and tied them up. Ran out for the run. What would you do differently?: get gloves off while on the bike - practice getting out of shoes while biking. Run
Comments: The run was hard. Real hard. Settled in on my pace and pulled just over 9 minute first mile. Not bad considering a pretty good hill climb involved. Pushed through, looking to hold HR in the low 160's for the first 3 miles. Kept going, taking water at every other station. Kept looking for other runners in my age group, found someone in Orange. Worked to keep pace and stay with this runner. Passed him on each climb and he passed me on the descents - he must of had the same idea. third mile was a bit slower, pulling 9:22. Missed the 4th marker so don't have the split, but the combined 4/5 time puts the average pace at 8:39 for the two miles. HR starts to climb as I push up the pace. Grab a gel somwehere during mile 5 and chase with some water. Keep trying to push harder, through mile 6, back is starting to ache and legs are on fire. Keep pushing since we are almost home. Pull an 8:14 mile six and keep pushing for the finish. See Anne from work and my wife cheering and keep pushing for the finish. Feel like colapsing at the end but so happy to have finished. No idea of my overall time... boy was I surprised to see the board - 2:41:26. Beat my original goal of under 3 hours! Run time was dangerously close to my target time of 1 hour, and 7 minutes off my 10K bay bridge time, but hey, what do you expect after swimming and biking, not to mention the course was very tough! Finally got to sleep around 11:30. Butterflies in the stomach and just plain excitement - set the alarm for 4:15. Woke up twice during the night, gotta love those pre race nerves. Grabbed a shower to help get the blook flowing and got my race gear on. BT Singlet and DeSoto shorts. Grabbed a bit to eat, a peanut butter balance bar and a bottle of accelerade. Kissed my wife goodbye and got in the car around 5:25. Downed a bottle of water in the car and powerbar gel. Got to the park around 6:00. Made my way to the transition area, got body marked and headed for my spot. Pumped the bike tires and got everything ready. Towel on the bike seat - bike gloves and glasses in the helmet on the aerobars. Popped the Ipod on and headed for the porta john line. After the morning ritual - checked over my area one more time - Time was 6:45. 15 minutes till transition closed. Sprayed the legs with pam and slid the wetsuit on. Called my wife who was enroute with the boys... Liking the extra hour of sleep. Meet my wife right at 7am and make the walk to the swim start. READY TO GO!
The yellow cap wave goes off and they call Navy (my wave) to the water. Get my goggles set and head in. Swim a few laps of the starting box to get warmed up and ready to go.
