Pre-race routine:

I didn't start til 10:29 so got to sleep in a bit. Got up...showered...dressed. Stayed in a hotel that served continental breakfast so grabbed a bagel and bananna on the way out. Took an hour to eat a bagel and half a bannana because of pre-race jitters. Got to the race site, set up TA, picked up timing chip, and got body marked. Watched swimmers snake their way across the pool for a little while.
Event warmup:

Did 3 laps prior to going to stand in line and wait for my swim time.
Swim
  • 08m 7s
  • 300 yards
  • 02m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was a pool swim. I usually breathe every third stroke, but couldn't get into that groove during the race. Was breathing every two strokes, which was okay. Freestyle at a steady pace the entire course.
What would you do differently?:

Need more pool time doing speed drills.
Transition 1
  • 03m 40s
Comments:

T1 went well. Nothing unexpected. There's a pretty good hike from the pool to the TA, and it was either concrete, sand (which was partially covered by rugs), and grass.
Bike
  • 41m 22s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.03 mile/hr
Comments:

Grabbed the wrong water bottle when packing my stuff and, of all things, that was the hardest thing to negotiate on the bike so I probably didn't drink as much as I should have. I even dropped it once and decided to stop and pick it up. Did manage to get a gel in without dropping anything or falling off my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Bring different water bottle. More saddle time.
Transition 2
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

Managed to unclip, stop, and get off my bike without falling...always a good way to start T2.
Run
  • 44m 55s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 14m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Hadn't been training heavily in running for a couple of weeks prior to the race since I was nursing a bout with shin splints. Decided I'd do 1 minute run/1 or 2 minute walk depending on how I felt and pretty much stuck with that plan.
What would you do differently?:

More running. Build endurance then work on speed.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit. Basked in the glow of finishing this year 20 minutes faster than last year and NOT being DFL (for the overall race anyway).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weight and overall fitness.

Event comments:

It's a great beginning of season race and one I see myself doing again and again.

Got into a good groove on the bike. My HR stayed near or just over the upper end of my training range, but I felt good, other than the occational hit of pollen my breathing was okay, and my legs weren't killing me...so I just went with it.
