Overall Rank = 181/594
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 4/35
Pre-race routine:

1 c oatmeal, coffee, juice
1/2 P&J at transition + almonds
just right
Event warmup:

22nd out of 193 women
  • 10m 49s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards

vaseline on feet helped, but forehead screamed in pain for first 100m due to cold temp, making me panic, serious thoughts that I couldn't make it because it wasn't feeling better.
What would you do differently?:

Wear 2 swim caps or purchase cold water swimming headgear
Transition 1
  • 02m 46s

struggled to find the pockets on my new tri suit to put my gel in, finally gave up
  • 53m 53s
  • 16 miles
  • 17.82 mile/hr

if more familiar with course, could have picked up 1-2 minutes
Transition 2
  • 01m 25s

the person next to me on the bike rack scattered all of my running gear which was slightly frustrating, didn't let it get to me.
  • 25m 50s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 19s  min/mile
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

improper head gear for swim
3 week vacation followed by 2 weeks to get ready for race

Event comments:

Friendly crowd, friendly competitors, many parents sneaking out to race and head back to kids sports events for the afternoon. You could hear a pin drop (plus the birds singing in the woods) during the national anthem. Since this race supports the IM ABLE foundation for veterans, a heart warming start to the race. Additionally they had a spin class for spectators during the race, along with hand cranks for the physically challenged. Great way to start the season.

Course: wonderful course except for first 1/4 mile at beginning and end with potholes. town was planning to pave over but couldn't because of the rainy week. rest of pavement was terrific, volunteers at every turn, beautiful scenery. even passed a brave turtle trying to cross the road. nice number of hills . . . not as steep as black bear, but challenging
