Pre-race routine:

Spent the night with Aerni and his bro Pat downtown. They gave me my own bed so I slept like a log. Got there at 2115 and was in bed right around 2200. Woke at 0330 for applesauce (2.5 cups) and 1.5 scoops whey, half powerbar and some gatoraid. Back to bed till 520ish. Got dressed in shorts, CEP socks, old tri top, long sleve black shirt and a thin trash bag, plus visor and glasses, and ready to go. Had a bottle of ensure 2 cups coffee and 3 sportslegs around 0600. Prepped a gatoraid with 2 enduralites in a small bottle for the race.
Event warmup:

Stacey met us downstairs and we walked to the start area. Ran into MG Stewart and his wife along with Taylor. Just a little stretching and a trip to the blue boxes then the bushes 7 min prior to gun. Dressed in tri top with long sleve and trash bag over the top for warmth and gloves/visor. Handed Stacey the long sleve prior to race start.

Comments:

Got into the coral at 710 for a 715 start. National anthem then wheelchair then us. Great being up front where the crouds weren't horrible. Still fairly congested for the first mile or 2. planned to start around 740 pace but was feeling outstanding and picked it up to 7:30 for the first mile then used the down hills on mile 2 for a 7:10. Tossed my gloves to Stacey at the Alamo.Maybe a bit fast there and that may have contributed to my malaise in the middle 3 miles. Felt good thru mi 4 but then just didn't want to push the pace. There was no 135 pace group in my coral so I was running by feel and my watch. When the 315 marathon pace group ran by me I got discouraged for a while. Mentally I was having a little trouble pushing myself and had quite a bit of indecission at most of the aid stations, to drink or not to drink...... Took my gel at 6.5ish and finished my bottle around 9mi. It was around the 8 mi point when I realized I had a very good shot at a PR. Around 10mi I noticed a little blister forming on my lt big toe. Not sure what caused it but was wearing my compression and feeling good in them. When the course split came into view my entire attitude changed and I started looking for the finish. Found Stacey unexpectedly at the 12+ mi point and stopped for a quick kiss. What a site, I missed seeing her at 8 and 10 so it was really nice to see her one last time. The turn north off of durango was a blessing. up the gradual hill then pushed hard down the hill to the turn in front of the dome. Watched lots of people slow considerably up the last hill and decided to use it to my advantage. crested the hil took the last right and sprinted to the line. B eat the 135 clock by just a few ticks!
What would you do differently?:

Need to treat the 5-8 mi section differently in my mind. 13 is a good distance but those middle miles seem to be hard. Push the pace a little harder
Post race
Warm down:

Walked thru the secure food area and got some grub. Bathroom then into the family area to meet Stacey.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My mind. Never thought I could run this fast at this level of effort. Need to rethink my ability and start training with a different focus.

Event comments:

Standard Rock and Roll event here in SAT. Nice quantity of bands on the crse and good post race food. Nice to get finished early and have a blue box with paper still in itm unlike last year!
