Pre-race routine:

Forgot breakfast, biked to race (2 mi) as warm-up. Had a mini-Luna bar and a gel before race start.
Swim
  • 10m 48s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 27s / 100 yards
Comments:

First time starting with the 35-39 yr age group...always been newbie or athena before. VERY aggressive swimmers, lots of people swimming over or on me, crashing into me from the side, kicking water in my face. Very unpleasant, but didn't impact my time as much as I expected. I'm used to being out front and not having to worry about other swimmers much, but I survived. At one point, had to stop to let another swimmer go in front who was perpetually swimming onto me from the right to be near the buoys.
What would you do differently?:

Start farther out from buoys. The marginally longer swim will be more than made up for by the lack of interference. I, at least, can swim in a straight line, unlike most of the other swimmers I encoutered!
Transition 1
  • 02m 16s
Comments:

Super slow, mostly because I got stuck behind a walker on the path from the beach and couldn't get around her. Also had difficulty getting socks on wet feet.
What would you do differently?:

Next pair of running shoes will be sized to run with no socks.
Bike
  • 35m 56s
  • 10 miles
  • 16.70 mile/hr
Comments:

Thanks to doing the time trials this summer, I knew I could go pretty much full out on this length of course without running out of steam. Felt pretty good.
What would you do differently?:

I think I could actually go harder and still be ok for the run. Need to work standing in the saddle more to power up the hills.
Transition 2
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

Quick and easy. Not sure I can do much better. The lock-laces really helped. Grabbed a quick drink since I didn't drink enough on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more on the bike so I can skip drinking during transition.
Run
  • 27m 15s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good. Better than I expected. Need to drink more on the bike...I suck at drinking on the run...nearly choked at the first water stop when I tried to drink a gatorade while running. Walked a bit to get it down.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more on the bike. Work more on mental toughness. I could have begun my final sprint to the finish much earlier and gone faster, but MT gave in. I didn't 'leave it all on the course'.
Post race
Warm down:

Chased kids around. Got a free massage.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Do more interval training. Do more training in general. More MT.

Event comments:

This is a great race. I've done it every year its been offered. Very well organized with tons of helpful volunteers and a great course...well, except for the road surface on the bike.
