Overall Rank = 542/659
Age Group = Men 50-54
Age Group Rank = 26/31
Pre-race routine:

My first ever olympic distance event. Hardly slept the night before I was so nervous. At 4:30 am got out of bed and started to pack my race gear for the drive to the race site. Arrived on site at 6:30 am.
Event warmup:

Brief swim to get aclimatized to the c-c-c-c-cold (61F) water
Swim
  • 32m 14s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started in the 3rd wave. No real trouble finding open space to swim in. Found sighting the first buoy easy but a little more challenging for the second buoy. Final leg to shore was fine.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I finished 5 minutes faster than I expected. I now have all winter to work on improving my technique and my endurance!
Transition 1
  • 03m 39s
Comments:

I was very slow in T1. Got a HUGE cramp in my calf as I was trying to peel of the wetsuit. Took time to work it out. Hard time getting my socks on because my hands were so cold. Then a bit of trouble opening the wrapper for the nutrition I needed (I am a diabetic). All-in-all a bit of a gong show!
What would you do differently?:

Be faster
Bike
  • 1h 30m 33s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 16.47 mile/hr
Comments:

Course was very hilly but very scenic. My training area has very few hills so found it challenging. Still, managed to average almost 27 kph and had planned to average only 25 kph. Lots of people passed me - many seemed to be ignoring the drafting/blocking rules - but I wasn't worried about anyone other than me.
What would you do differently?:

Need to train more on hills, add some aero bars to my Trek 1000 roadie and perhaps get some instruction on how to really benefit from the clipless pedals that I have.
Transition 2
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

T2 was much smoother than T1!
Run
  • 1h 01m 46s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 57s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt better than I expected on the run. Managed to stay on target for a sub-60 minute 10k until the last mile or so. Managed under 62 minutes which is not all that much slower than my normal stand-alone 10k time.
What would you do differently?:

Need to do some longer runs and some speed work.
Post race
Warm down:

A great lobsterbake!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My pre-race goal was 3:45 or best case 3:35. I finished in 3:09 and change so was ++++ happy with my first oly (at age 50)

Event comments:

I really liked this race. Volunteers were awesome, organization was great and location can't be beat. Hope to do it again in the future.
