Swim
Comments: The swim went pretty well. The water was a little brisk, so there was a lot of motivation to get finished. I controlled my HR this time and worked on pacing. I passed one person which slowed me up a little as I caught him at the beginning of a length and didn't get to pass until the wall. I got lucky with the time trial start as the people around me kept their pace. While the time wasn't great, I did come out of the water with my HR under control and not feeling winded. What would you do differently?: Not much. Maybe pick it up a little at the end. Transition 1
Comments: I thought I was slow in T1 but I had the fourth fastest time in the age group. I had a little problem with my socks but everything else went quickly. Although, I think a lot people didn't like running on the asphalt and put on extra clothes for the bike. I stuck with just the tri top and shorts. This left just socks, shoes and helmet for the transition. What would you do differently?: I should have done without the socks. Bike
Comments: The bike went pretty well. I had done a semi-long ride the day before and I could feel it on the one hill. I did manage to hit the one pot hole on the course during both laps. The second lap was a little trying when the course was more crowded. This race had a lot of beginners who were wandering all over the road. What would you do differently?: I should have pushed a little harder as I was trying to hit 20 mph. I also missed time the end. I slowed up as I thought I was coming to the turn but I had one more road to go Transition 2
Comments: This transition also went well. I wasn't quite as fast in the age group as a lot of people weren't wearing bike shoes. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: This was a PR for a 5k. I haven't raced many 5ks, especially not on a course that flat. I had the typical googlelly legs coming off the bike but by a 1/2 mile I had got into a good groove. Felt really strong after the turn around and had a strong finish. I did get to cheer for the guy running with crutches. Very inspritional seeing someone doing a tri with leg braces and crutches. What would you do differently?: Nothing, good run Post race
Warm down: Walked around, talked to BTers, drank some water. I got to watch Chippy, Body Check and Daerath complete their first tris. It was great to see how happy they were at the finish. What limited your ability to perform faster: I was using this as a warmup race and didn't taper. Also very little speed work. Event comments: This is a well run race that is very welcoming to beginners. I know the race director and she obviously puts a lot of effort into the race. She is also the race director for Montclair and I'm looking forward to that race. Hopefully next year my brother will train so we can have the big show down. Last updated: 2006-02-18 12:00 AM

I got up at 4:30 and had OJ, granola and a bagel. Then drove down to the race. It's close to my house, so I was there early. I was hoping to see my brother there but he punted so no steel cage death match. I did get to me up with some BTers, Body Check, 3558, Chippy, Tri Take Me Away, Coredump, and Daerath. First time racing with other BTers and I got to learn how to jock strap from some professionals. The number one rule of jock strapping is "its all about the racer" unless it interfers with the jock stapper's breakfast. Then shivitzing is allowed. Good rules to know.
I touched my toes a couple of times and then shivered a lot waiting to get in the water.
