Pre-race routine:

This was the race I signed up for before ever lifting a finger to train for tri's. Spent the last 5 months training, and did 2 sprints as practice runs. I felt confident that I had prepared well enough to finish strong and be happy with my time. Drove up to SC on saturday morning with my wife and 3 kids. Met my mom and dad at the hotel which was across the street from the expo and just 2 blocks from transition. It was hot in SC, but the skies were cloudless and it was beautiful. Spent the afternoon walking around, swam in the pool, and had tacos for dinner. Fell asleep with my 5 year old on the floor between the two beds (we shared a room with the parents to keep costs down). Alarm went off at 6, got up and showered and dressed, and we walked down to transition at about 6:30. Had a banana and a Clif Bar. Transition setup went fine, although the racks they use SUCK. They're floor racks where you slide your rear tire in, but they allow the bikes to lean over. Add in the fact that they had the racks too close together, so the bikes facing each other completely blocked access to the aisles. Headed down to the water at 7:45 for the pre-race meeting
Event warmup:

Got down to the beach and the fog had rolled in. Could only make out the first half of the pier, so they delayed the start till it lifted, which was an extra half hour. Ny dad and I got in and swam a few yards and got warmed up, then we just hung out on the beach.

Comments:

I had a great swim. I was hoping to be around 28:00 so I'm more than happy with my time. Water was chilly, but my warmup had me ready for it. This was my first running/diving start, but I knew from my first two sprints that I needed to stake a claim in the front because I'm one of the faster swimmers in my AG. I placed myself in the second row, but the first 200 yards or so were a mess. Guys swimming over me, slapping me in the head. Didnt let it get to me though....just pushed on through. Got into a good stroke halfway out and just visiualized stretching my body out as I went. Sighted every 20 strokes or so, but didn't need to make any course corrections at all. Stayed towards the inside and hit the first buoy dead on. Made it around the end of the pier, and that's when we caught the AG ahead of us. No real traffic though since we had pretty much the whole bay to swim in. Seemed like the tide may have been going out since I felt slower, but who knows. Hit the beach strong, but unfortunately no waves to do a sweet bodysurf move on. :) Ran up the beach and saw my wife, kids and mom cheering me on.

Transition 1
  • 03m 46s
Comments:

T1 included a long run up the beach, onto a sidewalk and up a pretty steep hill into transition. Only took me a minute to get my suit off, helmet on and shoes on. Ran out with my shoes on with no problems.

Bike
  • 1h 15m 50s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.66 mile/hr
Comments:

I'm pretty happy with my bike for how limited my training has been. I stayed aero most of the time except for the bigger hills. The course is real rolly, but I only got out of the saddle a few times. I think I just need to get stronger on the bike if I want to maintain any lead I get off the swim.
Transition 2
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

Real happy with T2. Everything went smooth here with no hiccups.
Run
  • 56m 30s
  • 6.21 miles

Comments:

I felt pretty crappy for most of the run. I had a minor side stitch right off the bat. My legs felt great right off the bike, but I was a bit winded. Took the first two niles real slow, then picked it up at the turnaround. At about a 1/4 mile to go I could see the finish down the way, and started to it out. Heard a guy right on my shoulder, and we battled down the chute! Saw my kids cheering me on and pinned it. Me and the other guy had a photo finish and we high fived at the end. Overall my time was about what a moderate training run would be, so considering it was right after the swim and bike, I'm okay with it.
What would you do differently?:

Train more and get faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked around with the kids and waited for my dad to finish.
