Pre-race routine:

Spent a lot of time stretching and doing my PT exercises on Friday and again Saturday morning to prepare for this running only race.

I got up about 6:00 and did my bathroom routine as always, and then after doing a bunch of stretching, 3 bridges/30 seconds, and 3 planks, I had a huge spoonful of peanut butter and a water with the sugar free orange packet from last night that I didn't finish.

Left the house about 6:40...as I was walking to el, I saw it go by, getting annoyed that I just missed it, and knew I'd have to wait longer now...

Went back and forth ALL week about what I was going to wear since I usually get warm, and so, I decided on the black tights from target, the long jog bra, (the light pink with black trim), my pink 1/2 zip that I always wear in races, the black head wrap I got at the expo, and the throw away gloves. Heading over to the race, I also had my black cotton pants on and my blue fleece jacket, which I will take off and gear check and be HAPPY to put it back on after race.

I also decided to do something new...which I know "they" say not to do...but I did. I took my orthotics out of my shoes. They REALLY hurt my feet after 3 miles, and I just didn't want to deal with that pain today....will that come back to bite me in the ass???
Event warmup:

There are WAY too many people in this race to do any kind of warm up.

I got downtown...shed the black pants/fleece jacket and gear checked...ran to the porta potty for quick pee, and then into the corral, like a donkey, (ha!), and wittled my way up to the front, and got right up where I couldn't go anymore, because then it was corral start B and I wasn't special enough to be in there.

While I was standing there, I looked over, and saw Jen's IM friend Bryan...we chatted...he asked me how my year was, and I told him I did my first HIM, and he was shocked. Why? I met him at Twin Lakes in 2006, when I DNF'd and I was balling my eyes out. He was so impressed, and said, "You have made so much progress...look where you started...you should be VERY proud of yourself!" It really made me smile...

Comments:

In my mind, before the race started, I really wanted to try to make it to every mile marker under 9:00 and to run pain free...

Felt REALLY good until I hit the water stop and with the amount of people stopping, it completely threw my stride off, and I am thinking that is what threw my stomach cramp into the mix.

The thing is...I am not sure what it was...was it the stride being thrown off, or the fact that I ran without my bricks, I mean, orthotics???

The difference between the stomach pain in this race, than at Soldier Field, or any of the many other running races where my stomach ruined my race was, how I was able to work through it, and keep my pace at where I wanted....I stopped 4 times...I can only imagine what my overall pace could have been had I not stopped at all...I am DEFINATELY making progress!!

Mile 1: 8:14
Mile 2: 8:36
**Stomach cramped for 1st time after water stop**
(Stopped, reached arms overhead and took deep breaths, and stretched tall)
Mile 3: 8:51
Mile 4: 8:38
**Stomach cramped again after turnaround, when we were running on grass/rocks/uneven ground**
(Stopped again, and did same standing tall stretch)
Mile 5: 8:50
**Another water stop, another cramp**
(Another standing tall stretch)
Mile 6: 9:16
Mile 7: 8:48
Mile 8: 9:56
**Got really crowded, and I didn't want to veer off the path, because of the uneveness, and I also stopped to stretch my legs (and lift up my tights to make them knee length, I was really hot, and my legs felt like bricks)
Mile 9: 8:47
To end: 2:55
What would you do differently?:

Not cramp up...but even though I went through all that therapy, and I thought it was gone for good, I really think I have made SIGNIFICANT progress, and I will just keep up with PT exercises and stretching.

I ran 6 on Tuesday, and felt like a rockstar...no cramps at all, at a faster pace than today's race, so, in my mind, the onset of pain was either crowd related, or ditching the orthotics.

Oh, even though it was 30 degrees...it was TOTALLY sunny out...and about a mile in, I was REALLY wishing I had my visor or my racing glasses. Note to self for next time.
Post race
Warm down:

I went right to gear check to get out of my sweaty jacket and put on dry clothes. Then, I got my fondue...and walked around looking for PJ!! Finally, I found her, and we walked around looking for Bennigans, but instead of seeing it right in front of us off of Michigan avenue, we decided to walk the opposite way, and found Kitty O'Sheas instead and had a WONDERFUL lunch!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Crowd...stomach pain.

Event comments:

Coming into this race...I really, really, really wanted to just run pain free. While that didn't happen, I still think I had a WONDERFUL race, and am so proud of myself for being able to work through it at a pace that is more respectable, and more representative of the runner I can be.

While this race isn't a 10 mile race, and only a 9.3 mile race, I ran 29 seconds faster per mile today...and I am so happy. It is definately progress, and that's all I can ask for considering how many years, doctors and nonsense I have had to go through to figure out this pain and the solution to keep it under control.

I am still running with a heavy heart after Dan passing away last weekend, and I thought of him and PeggySue for a lot of the race. During the National Anthem before the start of the 5k, I got really choked up thinking of Dan, Mom, and everyone else I love that is no longer with us...and it made me so proud...knowing that I was out here, freezing my butt off, hoping to have a good race, with them looking over me....

All in all...great day. Miami with Numbers (as my donkey folk call me)...is one happy chica! :)
