Swim
Comments: This was fun. Not as much bumping as I thought- wave only about 35. Enjoyed the management of the current. But the current and the chop made this harder than any OWS I did in practice. Definitely need to improve the breathing and rhythm. Couldn't get into that until I rounded the first buoy and then it seemed like we were approaching the end quickly. What would you do differently?: Was very comfortable w/o wetsuit, but do want to get one for future races. Need to practice more in rougher water to get used to a rhythm in those conditions. Swim tighter to buoys. Look for draftee. Interval training to improve strength and speed. Transition 1
Comments: No tri suit, so I had to put on bike shorts and shirt, plus socks and shoes. Plus ITB strap and gloves. Could do w/o gloves (but I wanted them on this course since road was rough). Too much stuff to put on. But organization and planning was good. Pleased with running through T and mount. What would you do differently?: Get a tri suit. No gloves. Definitely winded after the swim and the run out. Changes how you do things in T Bike
Comments: Could have ridden harder, but trying to manage heart rate and endurance for run. Surprised how much riders were spread out. Not much passing either way. Quite enjoyable. Bad screw up in prep: When taking the rear rack off of the saddle post, replaced post about an inch too low. No test ride. So had to ride this race in too low position. Really stupid. Lesson learned. What would you do differently?: Test ride bike after any changes. Obviously need more training to improve speed, endurance and hill strength. Transition 2
Comments: Wear running shoes to ride, so just needed to rack bike, grab hat and go. One nice thing about having the cage pedals. Forgot to remove left foot from cage before dismounting. I was able to slide my foot out as I was essentially leaping from my bike. Was ok, but could have been a disaster. What would you do differently?: Remove left foot from cage before dismount (idiot). Need to drink more on bike, so I have it for the run. Run
Comments: Calves hurt in first mile. Then butt hurt coming back. Very low on energy. Tried, but just couldn't go any faster. Effort to not walk, but I managed to keep trotting (that was one goal). Knee felt okay during run. ITB and miniscus area starting to hurt day after. What would you do differently?: Weakest part of race. Need to train harder with much more actual road time. See if knee can handle it. But really gives me a desire to get my running back to being decent again. Post race
Warm down: Warm down? More like don't fall over. Recovery did take some time. Did some stretching. Drank lots of gatorade and a EAS drink. What limited your ability to perform faster: Mostly the course management was pretty good for the first time. Mainly need to train harder in all sports - especially running. Event comments: Would have been nice to have a drink station at Mile 1 on the run since there was a volunteer table there. Could have been set up on both sides to get people going up and coming down. Food- pizza and cookies. Some fruit would be good. Pizza sure didn't sound good just then. I was impressed with overall organization- especially doing the OLY and Sprint together. Made for lots of awards - "success for every athlete". So I podiumed in first race. I am going to have to work hard to do it again. Overall, I am pleased with first race. Accomplished goals. Now need to set goals higher and train harder and smarter - plenty of room for improvement. Last updated: 2010-09-28 12:00 AM

Stayed in Fredericksburg - so an hour plus to race in AM. Would be better to stay closer. Plenty of excitement for first race, but overall pretty calm. Forgot goggles, in spite of checklist. A nice lady loaned me a pair. Otherwise, organization was good. It was very nice that the OLY and Sprint T areas were divided, so we could be in ours after their cut-off time. Need to nail down the breakfast program.
