Pre-race routine:

woke up 5AM, drank water and finished getting everything ready to go to the race.
Event warmup:

10 minutes swimming
Swim
  • 1h 17m
  • 3000 meters
  • 02m 34s / 100 meters
Comments:

This swim did a lot to build my confidence in the water.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

I was a little disoriented coming out of the water, so it took a minute to get my balance. I took my time and changed my swim bottoms for the extra padded bike short, which I had pre-lubed with chamois cream. My body was still very wet, so I am sure it negated some of the cream, as I did still have a bit of a rash at the end of the bike leg.
What would you do differently?:

Not pack my IPOD, as even though I found I was bored on the bike, I didn't want to put in earphones for safety sake.
Bike
  • 5h 58m
  • 86.99 miles
  • 14.58 mile/hr
Comments:

Wow, the bike was boring. The aid stations were at the turn around points, so it took me 36 minutes to reach each aid station. I had trouble with nutrition, as I could not stomach gels. I could eat gummie bears, fruit snacks, Clif shot bloks, bananas, and peanut butter crackers. I drank accelerade, gatorade and a korean brand of powerade and water on the course.
What would you do differently?:

Stay with one liquid. There was only water on the course, so we had a friend toss us replacement liquid each lap, but I did not prepare well and did not bring enough accelerade to cover the race, thereby causing me to mix liquids, which did not set well in the stomach. I had cramps and burping.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

I was one of the last bikes in, so I figured I wouldn't gain much from a hasty transition, so I took my time changing out to the run. I had to change from bike shorts to running shorts, and I mooned the volunteers at the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

unroll my socks and make sure they are turned right side out. Also use two race belts, one for the bike, one for the run, stocked with different things if possible.
Run
  • 00m
  • 18.64 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

It was very hard to run past the transition area, knowing you were finishing in a politically motivated spot, not one that was remotely best for the participants. No transportation was provided back to the T area, and the aid stations along the run ran out of food and low on drinks and volunteers late in the day. There was no food or massage at the finish line. Only water.
What would you do differently?:

Since I stopped my run to assist another athlete in finishing, I cannot know what I would have needed to do differently. Perhaps running more in the heat of the day would have been beneficial, since I began the run at 2:25 in the afternoon.
Post race
Warm down:

walk around, then caught a ride to the T area, then biked back to the hotel.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough bike prep. I should not have neglected so many training rides.

Event comments:

The race is not bad. With a bit of professional development, it could be a good destination race. The expo was two guys selling necessities out of the back of their vans in the parking lot of the hotel. Hotels were plentiful and clean, but no elevators, so we lugged bikes up and down stairs all weekend. Bring food for breakfast and snacks, perhaps even lunch. Only Korean food restaurants available in this village. Bad for those of us that eat only limited parts of the Korean menu.

2 lap swim; the water was very very cold, but extremely clear. The famous "diving women" of Jeju Island were the course safeties and were in the water all around us. That was very cool. the rope that marked the course served as a lap lane marker that was easy to follow the entire way. I swam over a couple of divers that were taking pictures looking up from the bottom, which was cool. I waved at them when I saw them.
Suit: Desoto First Wave
Course: The course was not too crowded and the water was so calm and clear it was like swimming in the pool. I was able to draft off several men and the wetsuit kept me so bouyant, I didn't have to kick my legs.

My goal was to finish in 6 hours, so I was pleased to control the pace to make the goal. Given that I've never ridden so far in one ride, and certainly not after the longest swim of my life, I was pleased.
Wind: Headwind
Course: 5 laps out and back along the beautiful coastline. I watched the tide recede and the famous diving women working in the ocean gathering the fish and seaweed. As the ride progressed, the wind got stronger. It was a headwind on the way out, tailwind on the way back. Rolling hills throughout.

The run ended up being over 20 miles. There were 3 10K laps, then another 3K to the finish line. I felt great on the run, as far as muscle strength went. However, I was no longer absorbing food and had trouble swallowing liquid without the gag reflex, so I don't know how long I would have kept up the strong pace. My first 10K was on pace to finish in under 3 hours, but then I caught up with David. He was having some nutrition and blister problems, so I stayed with him and walked the rest of the way. Walking made me sick, but I don't know how long I'd have lasted running on empty. I'd like to think my thirst and natural desire for replenishment would have resumed after the second run lap, but who can say for sure?
Course: Mostly flat, 3 laps out and back. Uphill finish downtown, which left us 3K from the finish line, exhausted, with no way back to the transition area, except to walk.
