Age Group Rank = 11/64
Pre-race routine:

Up early to work on the bike and drive to Katy. Made it just as they were starting to clear transition.
Event warmup:

Nothing other than the walk from the parking lot. The "lake" was not open for any kind of warm-up swim, the the 4-minutes between waves was all you got.
Swim
  • 09m 48s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was actually a good swim for me. I'm usually in the bottom 20% for swim times. Felt like it was a solid, even effort, and I actually swam fairly straight. Even though the number of people in the waves was small, I felt like there was a lot of contact duing this swim. Wetsuit strippers were great.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 02m 28s
Comments:

Slow transition times for me. I took a few extra seconds to mess around with the Garmin HR strap and watch.
What would you do differently?:

Get there a little earlier and try to get a spot with a little more room!
Bike
  • 44m 31s
  • 16 miles
  • 21.56 mile/hr
Comments:

For my level of ability, I hammered this ride pretty hard. I stripped down the bike before the race, so no bottles or flat kit, which turned out okay. This is a small "community" type of triathlon, so there are a lot of slower riders on the course and not everyone is real good about staying to the right.
What would you do differently?:

I'm very happy with this ride. Might have been able to push a little harder on the way back in, but not too much.
Transition 2
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

Another slow transition
Run
  • 22m 47s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

I did get a little hot on this run. I was hoping to hold 8-min miles, but I was a few seconds shy of this, at least according to my garmin. I'm thinking this course was about 1/4-mile short?
What would you do differently?:

I think I've got to do more speed work to get mcuh faster than this!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and had some water. Waited for transition to open, and headed home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I have been doing a lot of endurasnce training, but no speed work at all. I think I could knock some time off with dedicated speed sessions. Maybe next year!

Event comments:

This is a small, community type of triathlon. A lot of first timers, a lot of kids, and a higher percentage of people just trying to finish than what you might find at some of the bigger events. All in all a good, fun, safe race!
