![]() Swim
Comments: This was an eye opener! I know everyone says it and I'll say it again. I got pretty good in the pool with the past 2 months training, sub 2min 100m, but it doesn't prepare you for open water and all the people... just have to do more events for the experience... What would you do differently?: As a beginner, not start at the front of the swim like I was gonna murder everyone on the event. I should have started out back and wide and let alot of the commotion go in front of me. Only with experience should you get up front. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: With a disappointing swim, I was happy to jump on the bike and make up time. My transition was longer due to a GU packet I figured I needed. Clipping in and going was good and I thought I moved pretty smoothly through T1. What would you do differently?: I had road shoes, I'd invest in some tri cycling shoes that are easier to get on. I was tired from the swim and the 60yard hill I had to run up to get to T1, and so my fingers fudging with the straps and clips was waisting time. If I got some single Z strap tri shoes that would help. I'd also like to learn how to clip the shoes on the bike and jump on barefoot. That will just have to come with practice... ![]() Bike
Comments: It was fun! Chasing people and having small goals on the bike were fun... What would you do differently?: I'd need to train on some flatter longer stretches of road. Where I live I don't have that. So I'll need to go on weekend treks somewhere... Also, I'd say I can see how a tri bike and the technology of it all can increase your performance just that little bit more than my road bike... but that'll have to wait ;) Also, Not knowing how much I have left in the tank to use, I'd push more.... I didnt want to bonk on my first tri... ![]() Transition 2
Comments: I was quick I thought. had yanks on shoes so slipping them on and taking off helmet was all i needed... What would you do differently?: I might have jumped off the other side as I unclipped right foot, breaked, and jumped off left with left still in! I had to awkwardly take my cleat off and balance. I've never done that! but in the heat of battle and being a newbie, I'll focus next time... ![]() Run
Comments: great pace for me! great course and great environment. Loved hearing others pick each other up! I saw a guy stop in front of me and I told him don't stop, almost done, all down hill! and he said thanks and followed! I'd only hope someone would do that for me, but you heard that all over... it was great. My training pace was much slower that this so it was nice to pump it up pretty drastically for the race. I trained at 8 1/2 min miles and then did it a min faster for the race. So I don't know if I'm not pushing respectively for my training or the addrenaline is a great drug effect was kicking in.... What would you do differently?: Not knowing distances very well and how much energy to use, I'd kill this at a higher pace on the way out. I picked it up on the turn around since I knew I was almost done and how much I had left, but even then when I finished I was too terribly tired. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Fluides, banana, pickles and stretching... I noticed others puking and laying down... I was fine! So again, I could push myself next time knowing I have energy to burn. I'll get more comfy with distances etc the more I do them... What limited your ability to perform faster: Swim: need experience in open water. Need to stay relaxed... Bike: Push harder, transition slow with road shoes being hard to put on when tired. Run: kill it going out, will get better knowing distances and what is left in the tank to burn... Event comments: Would love to do this one again next year and see where I place or how I do against this first race time! VERY FUN!! Need to train in open water and need to train on long flat bike distances... Last updated: 2010-10-01 12:00 AM

Woke up at 5:15 and stretched and ate banana, greek blueberry yogurt and a kashi tlc multigrain and water.
This was my first tri. I set up transition like everyone else and tried to take it all in. I swam a few strokes in the lake before lining up and continued to stretch. Definately didn't get my upper body ready and awake! Was an 'experience' in the open water and with 50 ish other racers. Great experience for me...
