Venice Beach, California
United States
Total Time = 2h 48m 43s
Overall Rank = 253/684
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 39/106
Pre-race routine:

Not Much. Ate the Wheaties that were in the goodie bag (a mistake?) and had a cup of coffee.
Event warmup:

Ran up the beach a little ways
Swim
  • 30m 18s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 51s / 100 yards
Comments:

Didn't really expect the swim to be so full contact. Legs got whacked a lot, got cut off a lot. Started to feel sick after rounding the first buoy, I blame pre-race diet and lack of ocean training.
What would you do differently?:

Swim Harder. Ocean train more. 1 ocean swim in 4 months is not enough to get used to the action of swimming in waves and sighting.
Transition 1
  • 03m 33s
Comments:

Stopped to hurl at a trash can by my bike. Then decided to take my time and get my land legs back.
What would you do differently?:

Lose the socks, they take too much time to put on.
Bike
  • 1h 22m 40s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.04 mile/hr
Comments:

The Biking was very weak. I felt terrible getting on my bike post hurl and didn't feel good until Olympic Blvd where things got a little better and I got my average speed up.
What would you do differently?:

Focus on riding the bike more than once a week. I think I can still get more speed out of my 25 year old classic before upgrading to something aero. Maybe get a bike fitting, and a trainer so I can ride at home. Ive been riding a bike for about three months so I shouldn't really complain about the results it will take time.
Transition 2
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

Long way to the rack.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe leave the shoes on the bike. Hard to run in bike shoes.
Run
  • 50m 4s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Run more than Once a week.
What would you do differently?:

Practice on hills
Post race
Warm down:

Cold towels are nice. Loved the cookies.

Event comments:

Considering it was my first race I think I did ok. Would have liked to be a little faster at everything especially the ride. Will work on getting faster on my bike and sign up for another in the spring. Brick workouts would be a huge help too. I had no idea how taxing it to switch from swim to bike and bike to run. Respect to you all.
