Pre-race routine:

This was my first tri so I was really nervous and jittery the night before. I couldn't sleep. I set my alarm for 4:30am but I woke up at 3:30 and couldn't fall asleep again so I just got up early. I also went to bed a little early the night before (10pm) but didn't fall asleep until after midnight.

I thought they might close off T1 at 7 so I got there at 5:30am. I found a parking lot about a block away. I was wave 15 (9:10am) so I was really early. I set up my T1 area and hung around for awhile. Then the volunteers came by and changed our row from wave 15 to wave 13 so I had to move my stuff over to another rack. Good thing I was still hanging around over there.

I got done at 6 and walked back to the car to rest in the car. At 6:45 I walked back to make sure my T1 area was still looking ok and watched the pros take off. At about 7:30 I went to get my wetsuit from T1 and start putting it on. I just watched people until 8:30 which is when I went for my warmup.
Event warmup:

I hit the ocean for a little bit to just get used to the water. I usually get out of breath after the waves break so I took it easy this time and I was fine. After getting used to the water, I went back ashore and relaxed a bit.

There were still too many people in the ocean so our wave time got pushed back 10 minutes. The horn finally went off at 9:20.
Swim
  • 22m 53s
  • 704 yards
  • 03m 15s / 100 yards
Comments:

I felt good on the swim. I wanted to make sure that I swim freestyle the entire way and I was able to do that. I was nervous about the swim so I started way in the back of my wave and off to the side. I was one of the last ones in the water because I didn't want to be in the middle of the punching/kicking/etc. I dove through about 2 waves and got past the breakpoint and hit a decent but slow pace. I ended up passing a lot of people from my wave and I don't think anyone passed me.

When I was done, I walked over to T1.
What would you do differently?:

Start more in the middle of the pack instead of the back, run to the water, run to shore in the end. I think I could have shaved a good 3-4 minutes from my time.
Transition 1
  • 03m 4s
Comments:

I took T1 pretty easy. I wasn't rushing or anything like that. I took off my wetsuit, put it into a garbage bag and put the bag into my duffel bag. I then sat down and cleaned off my feet with my water bottle and towel. I put on my socks and cycling shoes. I put on my sunglasses, helmet, and gloves. I threw a clif bar into my jersey. I put my water bottle into my bike and walked off.

I walked over to the bike mount and mounted and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

My T1 time ended up decent (3/14 in my AG). I can probably hustle a little bit and knock off some time.
Bike
  • 49m 46s
  • 14 miles
  • 16.88 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike was supposed to be my strength since I'm normally a cyclist who needs to work on swimming and running. However, I had never ridden my bike right after a swim so I started out pretty lethargic and slow. It took about 2-3 miles to get used to being in the saddle from the swim. I hit a decent groove but I also wanted to use the bike ride to eat breakfast (clif bar) so i did that and it slowed me down a few times as I tried to eat, drink out of my water bottle, and ride at the same time.

Surprisingly I ended up 2/14 in my AG.
What would you do differently?:

Eat my clif bar about 20 min before the race starts so that i can focus on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 03m 36s
Comments:

I saw my wife and kid as I approached T2 so I said hello. I chatted a little bit when I got to my section in T2. I walked in, racked my bike, took off my shoes, put on my sneaker and running belt, and took off. I packed some more stuff into my T2 bag (cycling gloves, etc.) and wasted a lot of time.
What would you do differently?:

Not worry about being so neat and tidy in T2, don't stop to chat, run after putting on my sneakers.
Run
  • 42m 3s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 13m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

My run was slow slow slow....really slow. After the bike, my legs felt like lead. I just couldn't get up to run. It also didn't help that I had tendonitis for awhile now so I haven't been running. I more or less hobbled my way through the run.
What would you do differently?:

Get in much better run shape. I should be able to do this in about 25 minutes (which is what I normally do in a 5k run).
Post race
Warm down:

The iced wet towels in the end were great! Drank lots of liquid, ate an orange wedge, and walked through the tents a bit. I met my wife and kid, walked over to get my T1 bag, walked over to get my bike from T2, loaded everything into the car and went to Koreatown for lunch.

After lunch, drove back to Venice to get my car from the morning.

At night, I got a massage from my local place near my house.

Fun!!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Tendonitis in my left foot, weight, etc. I need to lose another 20 pounds to get even somewhat competitive.

Event comments:

This was an awesome race and I'll be back next year! If I can get in better shape, I'll do the Olympic distance. However, I wish they would set up the Olympic distance so that the bike and run actually go further out (or take a more roundabout route) rather than just repeat sections of the sprint.
