Pre-race routine:

Up at 4. Yogurt, grits, PB, and caffeine for breakfast. To TA by 5:30. Very nice cool, relatively dry weather.
Event warmup:

Ran around the block. Minimal swim warmup as access to water was limited.
Swim
  • 11m 18s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Never got comfortable. Struggled with technique, other racers, packs turning at the buoy. Not adequately warmed up. Very poor swim.
What would you do differently?:

Train to stay in better shape in the months before the race!
Transition 1
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

Still takes a while to get socks on but don't want to go without. Ran into a cluster at the bike mount area that slowed me down a few seconds but no biggie.
What would you do differently?:

Skip the rinse? Skip the socks?
Bike
  • 52m 25s
  • 15.9 miles
  • 18.20 mile/hr
Comments:

Really struggled to keep a decent pace.
What would you do differently?:

Stay in shape and not slack off for four months.
Transition 2
  • 00m 41s
Comments:

Reasonable transition.
What would you do differently?:

I could try to speed it up a little
Run
  • 40m 23s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 12m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

That run was definitely longer than 3.1 miles due to addition of the neighborhood jaunt. I "ran" all but about 1/4 mile and still had a horrible time. Not a good run for most other people but not a bad run for me. I just can't run very well.
What would you do differently?:

Get a new body that can actually run faster than most people walk.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank, and ate a banana.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Limited training for past four months.

Event comments:

Deep water start done in the past was better for this race since the beach bottom had some rocks and debris and a few people cut their feet running in. Would have liked to see run course more accurately guaged for distance. Overall a very nice event on a beautiful day.
