Pre-race routine:

I love how close this race is to home. No hotel, no packed food, no long drive, no weird beds, no outside annoyances-well if you count my neighbors...
Alarm, Breakfast (cereal milk and 1/2 scoop protein) 3 hours prerace, sportscenter, caffeine, pack and out the door.
Set up transition, bathroom 90 times, 1/2 packet of sport beans caffeine cherry-cause i forgot my gatorade-and water. Down to the swim.
Event warmup:

Learned from last year--DONT get in the water to warm up. The water temp feels great-73 degress versus the air of 50-but you have to get OUT to be grouped and for the national anthem-WHOA cold! singer did a great job this year-but i felt bad cause she can hoooooold a note!
So instead I did light jogging near the corrals, some sand sprints to get the blood flowing and used the concrete wall as a stretching spot.
Swim
  • 07m 48s
  • 400 yards
  • 01m 57s / 100 yards
Comments:

A/G rankings and overall not listed but wife says I was 7th out of the water. My wave was first so I imagine other waves had faster swim times than me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing-I wanted to really push this swim, and I did. Kicked in the face once, and once in the body but pretty clean swim. Drafted off about 2-3 different people and stayed ahead of the laundrymat.
Transition 1
  • 00m 54s
Comments:

Same T1 as previous years-from the swim along the outside edge run in had long run to row/rack-1st rack-closest to the bike out though. Cold hands already-glasses on-Immediately fogged so I had to teeth them, helmet on bike in hand and out the gate. Had my shoes banded in but the cold made me slow mount the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Anticipate fogging glasses in those conditions in the future.
Other than than nothing
Bike
  • 36m 6s
  • 13 miles
  • 21.61 mile/hr
Comments:

Again don't know A/G or overall rankings- I know based on seeing some other age group results that I was in the top 30%-but far from top 5-10%. I know this was the first race that I was only passed once and made one pass so I feel real good about that. I know some strong riders were coming and being a sprint, they were coming fast.
What would you do differently?:

Actually I would push harder. I had a mental lapse during the ride and thought it was 15 miles. I really pushed the beginning and sadly became content midway-once i saw we were going back in I pushed again. Next year--ALL OUT, all the time.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

So again with the cold, I kept my shoes on-usual, and stopped before dismounting. Slower than usual but safer. My feet were blocks of ice-no socks. I like my transistions to be <1:00 if possible, so 1:01 is just irritating. 1st rack on right once into transition-real close! Shoes on race belt on, 1/2 bag sport beans in hand.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. well maybe ill put foot warmers in my shoes pre race.

Comments:

Water swig before heading out. Man were my feel cold for the first 1/2 mile-REALLY couldnt feel them. Left with 3rd place athlete: ATC guy. I know I love the run so I had to get it under control fast-sprint course so I know I just gotta push. took a few beans-cold and hard to chew. 3rd got away from me for a few seconds, then I started to get it back. Caught and passed ATC guy in a hurry and pushed on. 1st station is at mile one just after the hill few beans here, still hard to chew and I hear Mike from Reality bikes in the background yelling at me. He's a killer on the bike so I knew he'd be coming but I'm hoping to not let him get close on the run. Its nice motivation to push-MORE. At the turnaround he still barking at me and I finally get a chance to see how far from the "lead" I am and how close people are (I HATE looking over my shoulder). The 2 "leaders" are a good 1/2 mile ahead of me, not making that up in a 5K, and ATC guy is about a tenth back, mike from reality is closing and about a quarter back. A little further back is Josh from reality-another crusher on the bike compared to me and I know I gotta move. Mentally I flipped a switch and just let it go. couple more beans at mile 2 aid station, splash of water, trashed the rest of the beans and sprint. I now had alot of people on the course and there was alot of commraderie, and the view was awesome-"LAST race of the season-GO" So I had a hard push to the finsh. wait-"1st place" guy is already back on the course cheering-ugh GO FASTER, WIDE OPEN.
Watch read: 7:22. 6:46, 5:50. Woohoo first negative race!
What would you do differently?:

See if I can push harder earlier.
Post race
Warm down:

Light stretching, ALOT of talking. water. Go see Mike, and wife Emily finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Cold

Event comments:

I would love to rate post race activities GOOD, and have in past years, but this year I was a little upset about a few things. No pizza-A: its warm, this year we were given lunchmeat cheese and bread. B:salty, and easy to grab and move on, buffet style seemed slow. Also I cheered the last finisher in under 4 hours and since she "took so long" ALL the vendors had already closed up shop and packed everything away-SHE BARELY GOT A WATER! No sandwiches/gatorade/fruit/prunes/crystal light/cookies/muslce milk/mix 1--NOTHING. In the past years of this event the vendors outlast the athletes and give their product away LAST. GAmultisports usually does a good job of door prizes, this year slim picking. But not from lack of stuff. after the awards plenty of items were on the table to be distributed but weren't. Overall I LOVE THIS RACE and will do it next year. I dont need door prizes or alot of post food but dont tease with a table full if your not going to give it away and dont pack up for those who take "longer than you want to be there" Lastly I heard a cervelo was stolen, Mike and I ASKED to be checked out of transition because apparently the volunteer in charge had stepped away. I hope the stolen bike is just a story. SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!

Course: DOWN from transition, flat short section, little uphill then DOWN and out of the park, a little winding but easy to keep and get speed. I saw that I was in 2nd after transition. The pace truck was about 100yds away. Road to Newbethany is a set of long rollers, once on newbeathany youve got 3 rolling hills-the barn hill alot of people have trouble with. then a long flat section, turn downhill, 2 rollers and back on your way into the park. Winding downhill to the marina, and then all uphill minus 1 to transition. Sharp uphill into transition. dismount. I had 1 water bottle for the ride and 1 gel pack. (Im trying to fuel more for races and see how it goes). Gel pack @mile 6 was still cold and REAL gooey-thank goodness for the water. Great police support, great volunteers. finished the water, came into T2 in 3rd.
