Run
Comments: The race sort of started all wrong for me. We got there only 30 minutes before the gun went off and I had to urinate urgently. Of course there are only 4 portapots in each chute and the line was about a block long. I resigned myself to just being miserable and went and lined up at the start. About 5 minutes before the start I found a line with only 3 people in it and was able to go. The gun went off right as I came out so I sprinted up to the start and just barely was able to cross the timing mat. The excitement of the start made me go out too fast, which was another mistake. I also wasn't hydrated well, and only took 1 sip of water at each aid station. I could have used some more food beforehand too. At the 5K mark I started really suffering; I think my split was right under 25 min at that point. My stomach was in knots and I didn't know what was going to happen. It felt pretty urgent, if you know what I mean. Thankfully nothing happened, but I was cramping for the remainder of the run and saw my goal of sub 50 minutes pass me by. I was disappointed with my time, but proud of myself for pushing through the obstacles. And even then, it was still a blast. Tracy finished the race in 1:17:30, which is a great time for her. It was her first ever 10K, and the furthest she has ever run--previously 5K has been her max. My parents walked it in around 2:20, and my mom really struggled. She had knee surgery about 9 months ago, plus has some other health problems and is about 40 pounds overweight. I'm really proud of her for finishing. What would you do differently?: This was just a bad race for me performance wise. I never felt comfortable or easy, and really struggled to run the entire thing. I think it was a combination of the above problems, along with inadequate training before hand. The ankle injury cut down my running by at least 50%, so I just didn't have the miles in before-hand. Post race
Warm down: Walked around, drank a bottle of water, had a popsicle then went and sat on the sidelines to wait for Tracy. What limited your ability to perform faster: Coming back from injury GI issues Inadequate hydration & nutrition Event comments: CCC is an amazing race and I am very glad I got to come back home to be part of it. It is also the start of a new tradition with my family. Last updated: 2006-02-20 12:00 AM

We drove in from Dallas the night before, so it wasn't ideal conditions pre-race. Was running on very little sleep and was pretty stiff from the car ride. Had some oatmeal and bottle of water about 1 hour before race. My mother and father did the race with my wife and I.
Does waiting in line for the portapot count?
