Pre-race routine:

I checked into the Galt house on Friday around 11:00AM. David (DavidTris) met me here around noon and we went to athlete check-in and the expo. My friend and roommate for the weekend, Todd (CincyTodd,) checked in a few hours later. After Todd was settled the three of us relaxed in the room until it was time for the Friday evening athlete dinner and race meeting. We met up lots of other Cincinnati athletes and Dan (DLaw) at the dinner. After the meeting was over, it was an early night to sleep.

I met David, Dan, and Amanda (my teammate) for the practice swim on Saturday morning. Swim was nice. Water was warm and no current. After we finished our swim, I went back to the hotel to shower and pack gear bags. David and I turned in our bikes and gear around 12:30. I went back to the hotel and relaxed for a few hours. I met Amanda and a few other people from our team around 2:00 and had social time for a few hours. I had time for a nap before eating my pre-race dinner of a turkey sub from subway.

The morning alarms were set for 4:00AM. I had my pre-race breakfast of bagel with PB and honey, OJ, and banana. Todd and I left the room at 5:00AM to walk to transition. David stayed with us the night before the race, but decided to sleep in a bit longer. In transition, we checked our bikes and nutrition. It is a long walk to body marking and the swim start. We arrived and the swim line was already really long. No worries. I was not concerned about where I was in line.

My teammates found me in line – still amazes me how they did this with so many people. It was great having friends there to support me before the start.

Thank you to E2 and the other Cincy support crew. You were all AMAZING!! Having you there on the course made the day so much better!

Event warmup:

Walk to transition and then to the swim start.

Once the gun went off the line moved quickly. I ran down the path and jumped in. The water temperature was nice – no wetsuits! :-) There was some bumping and contact during the swim out. I had free space in the water for a little while and then found myself caught in a pack that I needed to swim through. After the turn around the water really opened up and there was almost no contact. I felt very comfortable and controlled in the water. I noticed I drifted off to the right toward the center of the river a few times, so I tried to focus on sighting. I felt very relaxed the entire swim.

What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was a great swim.

T1 took way too long! I had a volunteer, but she really wasn’t sure how to help. She tired. A port-a-potty stop was needed – tummy troubles. My bike was stuck on the rack. It fit fine during check in, but due to the close fit of the bike, it was stuck. I struggled to free the bike from the rack. This must have been so funny to everyone watching. I was a little stressed, but also found it humorous.
What would you do differently?:

I was in the port-a-potty too long, but it was necessary!

Comments:

I felt great starting on the bike. I started hydrating early while on River Rd. My legs felt so strong. I kept the pace under control and made sure I did not over push. Before I realized I was at the out and back section. I was very cautious going down the hill. I have seen bad accidents here during previous years and didn’t want any part of that. The turnaround appeared quickly and I was on my way back up. I stayed seated and spun up the steep hill. It was fun passing guys on the way up. :-) There were a few comments from some of the guys about how if they were being chicked at least it was by a bad ass chick. Compliments on the uniforms. The skull and crossbones are a hit! Around mile 30 my lungs started feeling tight (asthma). I backed off a bit and things soon felt okay. I then picked up my pace and was back in my happy spot. The course seemed to fly by. I was doing great with nutrition. I was relaxed and having fun. I love this bike course. I know I was smiling! Around mile 95 my asthma started bothering me again. I had been having some issues the previous two weeks and knew before the race that I was not back to 100%. I backed back off the pace again slightly. I was still feeling okay and under control. I was so excited to be back on River Rd and then in transition. What a great feeling having everyone cheering as you dismount the bike. I was very happy with my bike split.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2

Comments:

I had help from a wonderful volunteer. Used my inhaler, had sunscreen applied, and took a quick stop in the port-a-potty.

Comments:

My legs felt decent. I was ready to run. My lungs, however, were not. I took off hearing everyone yelling for me. I ran to the bridge and knew it was going to be a long marathon. I walked and used my inhaler again while on the bridge. I wanted my lungs to cooperate with my body. I had to keep a slow, steady pace. This run was a struggle. I had been struggling with my run for the past 6 weeks and the asthma issue was not helping. I would try to push my pace, but then my lungs would tighten and I could hear the wheezing. I didn’t want to be pulled from the course by medical. I was going to finish the race even if it was a slow pace. I did what I could to continue moving forward. I used too much Albuterol (inhaler) and was becoming shaky and feeling sick. I took in water and Perform at every aid station, but no food. I did a shuffle and then walked the aid stations. I could feel the swelling in my body. Everything felt tight. I was so happy to see the crowds and hear the noise of the finish line. I wanted to run a 4 hour marathon, but things don't always go as we plan. I knew I was not going to achieve my goal of sub 11 hours, but knew I could still PR. I did!
What would you do differently?:

Better run. :-)
Post race
Warm down:

Was walked to medical for treatment.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor run.
