Pre-race routine:

Just the usual shake about 2 hours before the race. It was in the 40's at the start, so a little cool for me for short sleeves for the bike, so I decided to wear cycling jersey, arm warmers and tights for the first run and bike, and I would take off the tights and arm warmers for the second run.

There were about 10 Cadets from the West Point Triathlon Team there, which was good to see.
Event warmup:

Bike course was 4 loops, so I decided to ride one loop for a warm up and to get familiar with the course. Was glad I did because there were some areas with really rough pavement, plus some curvy descents. Also about a half mile of running.
Run
  • 24m 6s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 45s  min/mile
Comments:

Should have warmed up a little more because I felt a little tight the first mile or so. Loosened up by mile 2 and was able to maintain a good pace. Around the beginning of mile 3 I passed one of the women from West Point. Felt pretty good to be able to pass a Cadet!

This is actually a 5K PR for me by 6 seconds, so an excellent run. If I had know I was going to run this well, I would have pushed it more and maybe break 24 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Better warm up.
Transition 1
  • 02m 43s
Comments:

Way too slow. I wanted to wear gloves, and I put them on before my helmet, but then I couldn't buckle my helmet, so I had to take them off. I must have been moving in super slow motion, because this was really bad!
What would you do differently?:

Move faster. Helmet before gloves.
Bike
  • 49m 25s
  • 15 miles
  • 18.21 mile/hr
Comments:

Good ride, except I was too slow on the descents which is typical for me. I'm just too chicken sometimes. I climbed well, so that was good. When I would spin past someone who was really mashing and struggling up a hill, I wanted to suggest that they try an easier gear, but I kept my mouth shut.

The course was a little hillier than it seemed, because when I put it into Delorme Topo, it turns out 4 laps was about 900 feet of climbing.
What would you do differently?:

Let it rip down the hills.
Transition 2
  • 02m 25s
Comments:

Way too slow again. Had a little trouble getting arm warmers and tights off.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know why my transitions are always so slow. Definitely something to work on next year.
Run
  • 25m 48s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

Too much of a drop off from the first run. This hurt a little bit, but I should have pushed myself harder mentally and physically.
What would you do differently?:

Suck it up, buttercup!
Post race
Warm down:

Just walking around.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough training, 5 or so extra pounds, mental toughness.

Event comments:

Fun race, close to home, nice way to end the season. Will probably do it again.
