Run
Comments: I have lost a lot of fitness over the last month, between not really working out and not eating very well. So I thought I would go out conservatively and aim for a 3:40-3:45 finish. By mile 3 it was obvious that wasn't going to happen, as my legs were already starting to hurt. So I backed off the pace to around 4 hr. finish pace and shifted my goal to running the whole thing. I've never done that before, it's been a huge mental hurdle for me. Around mile 11 my hip abductors and quads got very tight and I thought it may be a long day, but around mile 14 I got a huge second wind and felt pretty good all the way to mile 23. Mile 23 is where I think I made one of my biggest mental breakthroughs in running. I know it wasn't at a super fast pace like many of you on here can do, but I absolutely refused to walk and managed to bang out 7:45 and 7:51 for my last 2 miles. Given how I felt physically this day, I will never be more proud of a marathon finish than this one. What would you do differently?: Run a little more and eat more healthily after the ironman to avoid weight gain and loss of fitness. Post race
Warm down: Stretched, had some pizza, and waited for the GF and her friend to finish. Got the bad news that the GF had to drop out at mile 18.5. She is a slower runner due to foot issues, but they were taking down the aid stations too early and there was NO medical support on the course. What limited your ability to perform faster: Laziness, diet, genetics... Event comments: Ok so I have a few issues to take the race director to task for. First, if you advertise a 7 hr. finish limit, don't start taking aid stations down ahead of that pace. The GF was out on course the last 45 min. before dropping out ahead of that pace but had no water available and got dehydrated. Then also she was picked up to be taken back to the start line, and they dropped her off by herself almost half a mile from the start. If she had really been dehydrated or in severe need of medical attention that would be very dangerous. So once I found her, I walked her back and went to the medical tent to get ice and guess what I found? Absolutely no one there, asked the cop nearby where they were, apparently they "went home". And this was only 5 hr 30 min into the race. Totally unacceptable! So I have to say, if you are a slower runner, do NOT do this race! Sorry BT...rant over now! Last updated: 2010-10-19 12:00 AM

I ran a total of 4 times since the ironman more than a month ago, so I wasn't expecting much other than to just go out and have a good time. Headed over to Des Moines with the GF and one of her friends, both also doing the full. Did packet pickup and waited around for an hour or so for the pasta dinner. The dinner was actually pretty good, and we got to sit at the same table as Jeff Galloway, who was the keynote speaker, so that was pretty cool. Got to sleep early that night but didn't sleep all that well. Up at 6, had a banana for breakfast, and headed down to the start. It was a chilly morning so we waited inside an office building until right before the start.
Nada, not going to be breaking any records today so just took it easy the first mile as a warmup.
