Swim
Comments: I loved the swim. While I did end up passing a lot of people I always had a path. Seeing the site bouy was very easy. I was shocked how quickly the exit bouy came up. There was a little congestion at the exit but the catchers were awesome. The pulled me right out and I was on my way. I didn't have the normal dizziness I usually get from long swims. Great start to the day! What would you do differently?: Maybe hold a little tighter to the bouys on the down river section. Overall I'm thrilled with my first ironman distance swim! Transition 1
Comments: I'm slow in transition and I fully own it. I took forever getting into my bike shorts as I was wet. I also took my time cleaning my feet before putting on my shoes... no use getting a rub. What would you do differently?: I could move a little quicker. Maybe not apply sunscreen on my competitors:-) Bike
Comments: I only rode more than 30 miles this past spring... just started biking last summer... so I'm beyond thrilled with my performance. The course suited me with the rollers as I'm a timid downhiller but a decent climber. The weather was fantastic, the support stations first rate, and the course was beautiful. For the first time I actually got myself to eat ... downing two packets of cliff rocks and two packets of shot blocks. I can't handle the perform on the course so I stuck with water and salt tabs. My speedfill hydration system was perfect for me....having the straw in my face reminded me to drink. What would you do differently?: Totally cool with what I did. Might have been able to push harder....but being this was my first ironman I think it was perfect. Transition 2
Comments: I knew as I was in transition that I need to move faster. It took me forever to get my compression shorts on. Oh well... at least I was in good spirits and my helper was great :-) Man the sunscreen hurt going on... chaffing from my shirt! I downed some sport bean ... hit the porta potty and was on my way. What would you do differently?: Stop chatting and focus on changing. Run
Comments: I'm no runner so I knew this was when the race really got hard for me. I actually felt fantastic going into the run but I wanted to focus on finishing so I didn't push it. I did a run walk the entire time. My inner thigh was extremely tight from playing polo the weekend prior.(not a recommended taper activity)Any time it started to act up I walked it off to ensure a healthy finish. I knew I had time even if I walked the whole thing. In the end I really could have pushed harder and been fine... but I'm happy that I went with "better safe than sorry" What would you do differently?: I could have run more and walked less but I'm good with how it went. Post race
Warm down: I got caught by a great volunteer and walked though the finish. I wanted to wait for my friend who I saw a few miles behind me. We managed to miss eachother but connected about 20 minutes later and walked down to the convention center for food and results. It was a long walk back to transtion to pick up our gear and bikes and then it was shower and bed for both of us. Event comments: Very well run and the volunteers were fantastic. I always felt taken care of and I really felt that everyone made an extra effort to make the race great for me. I can't thank them enough for their fantastic support! I don't really have a routine as I change things up every race. This time my friend .and I watched Bridesmaids the night before and had lights out by 9:30pm. We got up a 5am. I had a granola bar, 4 Gatorade prime bars and an expresso shot. I have to say it sounds like a nutty combo but it really worked for me. I pulled on my speedsuit filled up a water bottle to carry on to the swim start and we were walking to Transition by 5:45. All I needed to do at transition was fill my speedfill and power up my garmin. We where walking to the swim start by 6:10
The walk to transition and to the swim start was plenty. The air temp was perfect. I had my ipod on listening to tunes and keeping my head clear. We were one of the very last to line up. As both of us are strong swimmers we decided for the extra sleep versus getting an early stop. It was the right call for us. I think there were less than 50 people behind us.
