Pre-race routine:

Woke 3.5 hours before the race and ate two bagles and began hydrating. Was the first person to set up in transition.
Event warmup:

A little jogging, light stretching, high-knee run in place and relax. Spent time talking with friends from around the state.
Run
  • 24m 3s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

The run felt ok but the wind seemed to tak its toll. One guy in my group who I am always in stiff competition with ran shoulder to shoulder with me for the first mile but then fell out. It was nice to be able to press the pace a little and be able to keep it up.
What would you do differently?:

I don't think I would do anything differntly.
Transition 1
  • 00m 43s
Comments:

The transition went faster than I thought but I think I might have been able to squeeze a couple more seconds out of it.
Bike
  • 1h 01m 14s
  • 18.64 miles
  • 18.26 mile/hr
Comments:

This was the hardest ride I have ever had.
What would you do differently?:

I would have checked my areo bars. The forst major bump I hit they learched upward. I spent much of the race adjusting them back into place. Fortunatly they were tight enough that the would generally hold and didn't just swing all over.
Post race
Warm down:

Just spent time talking with friends some more and then hit the showers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

THE WIND!!!!!!!!!!

Event comments:

The worst part of the race is that it took more than 2 hours to get the race results organized for only about 75 people. Most people got fed up and left. I'm not sure what it is about the Holoman AFB races but they never get the results done on time or very well. However, they try hard and have a good pasta lunch afterwards, which is a big plus.

Performance:
Wind: Strong with gusts
Course: The course was an out and back with a number of cuves, crossed train tracks three times and there were some pretty rough spots that caused a lot of bouncing. The real killer was the wind. Someone said there were gusts to 40 mph and because of all the turns it seemed like much of the time you were heading into the wind or with it blowing strongly across. There were a number of times when I was nearly blown off the road and I spent most of the race leaning hard to keep upright.
