![]() Swim
Comments: This was my first triathlon experience, and biy is the swim start wild. I have been warned of this, but it was wilder than I even expected. Bodies and water crashing together, stopping and starting. It was well over half-way through the swim it finally calmed down. Wild but fun in its own sort of way. Soon after it calmed, I then began to get the super fast guys from the wave behind me passing me, and the super slow people in the wave in front needing to be passed. It got wild again. I did not use my legs too much, and despite this I started to get really minor cramps in my calves that concerned me a little. They were gone as soon as I got out of the water. What would you do differently?: Get tinted swim goggles, I think this may help with my sight in the water. Practice more open water and wetsuit swimming in addition to pool swimming. I felt pretty strange in my wetsuit, and I think I negated the flotation advantage by swimming awkwardly in the suit. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: This was my first triathlon transition ever, and it took a while. I was a bit overwhelmed by the whole process, and I took a minute ot two to collect myself. This will get better with practice. took a bit to get the wetsuit off, and some time to dry feet de-sand them and get going. What would you do differently?: practice, focus. ![]() Bike
Comments: I really had the most fun on the ride portion of my first triathlon, but I learned a bunch. I averaged 17mph which I am pretrty proud of, but I know I can go faster. Wind resistance is certainly a limiting facter on a flat course when going fast. I could tell the difference going into the wind and away from the wind. It slowed me down. I need to practice hydrating on the bike, and eating on the bike. My lack of affected my run. I need to get a better fit on my bike, while it is good casual riding, more precise fit will allow me to go faster with less energy. What would you do differently?: get a bike fit, learn to ride in the aero position ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Much easier transition for me, I even managed to take the things I learned from the first one. I plopped down, and got to changing shoes quickly. Underestimated to funkiness of bike to run transition. ![]() Run
Comments: My inexperience really reared it head in the run. I reflection, lots of factors slowed me down significantly in the run. My shins cramped up after the bike, and really made for a mentally low point in the first mile of the run, in which I walked much of it. I powered through and they eased up for the rest of the run, but I was really beat. It was all about keeping going for the rest of the run. Training played a factor in this, but I think hydration and nutrition also were a factor. Something for me to work out headed into more races. What would you do differently?: More focus with training. Brick training. Figure out hydration and nutrition during race. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Ran the last 100yds with my 9-year old daughter. The highlight of the race What limited your ability to perform faster: experience and training. Event comments: This was such a great experience. I cannot wait for the next one. Last updated: 2010-10-26 12:00 AM

My first triathlon. I was nervous, and it showed. slept lightly the nigh before, and woke to arrive early at the transition area. Set up my stuff as best I could, and scoped how my rack looked from the various entries. This helped. then headed down to the starting line to check out the start of the sprint race to get my bearings. Went back to the car to put on my wetsuit. Lots of little logistical stuff I did not think of. Where to put my keys and phone, bring a headlamp, it is dark at 5:30 am. How to get from the parking lot to the start with no shoes. The little things.
I warmed up in the water by doing short swims in the designated area next to the start while watching the wave start before me. This helped get me relaxed enough to have some confidence in my survival during the event.
