Pre-race routine:

Up at about 5 am. Coffee and oatmeal and then left hotel. Got there early and got bike set up. Set out clothes in transition and rehearsed a bit. Had some sweet bread and PB and drank about 1/2 bottle of gatorade.
Event warmup:

Rode for a bit to get it in the right gear for hill out of transition. Then ran for about 10 min and then stretched a little.
Swim
  • 06m 46s
  • 300 meters
  • 02m 16s / 100 meters
Comments:

Need to work on staying relaxed, breathing (exhaling underwater), and concentrating.
What would you do differently?:

Don't know I could've down much different. Definitely need to work more on my swimming
Transition 1
  • 02m 42s
Comments:

T1 went smooth. Beginner's clinic was helpful. Had stuff layed out just right. Spend a little extra time drying off since it was so cold. Wore fleece performance top which was just right and not hard to get on. Put two camp towels inside short legs which helped dry up dripping water.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe not wear bike shoes - not sure if I got much out of them.
Bike
  • 44m 54s
  • 11.81 miles
  • 15.78 mile/hr
Comments:

Stayed seated but not in aerobars much. Hills required lots of shifting so I had to stay on drop bars most of time. Gears didn't go low enough to keep high cadence - dropped below 60 more than a few times on the bigger hills. Aero bottle got too far out and I couldn't drink easily without getting out of seat. Right amount of clothing - shorts, long sleeve top, wind gloves, headband. Stayed warm but not overly so.
What would you do differently?:

Take off Aerobars on hilly course. Not worry about bike shoes until I get clipless pedals and learn how to use them. Train more on hills. Practice shifting.
Transition 2
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

Easy transition
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 38m 41s
  • 3.4 miles
  • 11m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Tough course. HR was low but legs just wouldn't go. Had to walk on hills a couple times - was faster than running.
What would you do differently?:

Train on trails and hills? Do more bricks.
Post race
Warm down:

Kept walking. Had water and banana then walked back to transition area. Showered and put away bike and gear. Walked back to awards area.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not training on hills enough. Not enough bike/run bricks. Not enough practice shifting.

Event comments:

Good race for beginners - pool swim, friendly and open to newbies. But the bike and run are tough due to the hills and trails. Lots of fun, though. Would do it again.

155 avg, 162 max
Suit: zoot shorts and tope
Course: Staggered start (15 seconds) based on predicted swim time. I was #82 out of 100+. My time was almost exactly as predicted. I passed a couple people and got passed twice first 150 meters. Then there was a big jam up the last 100 meters 4 people long. Really had to slow down in order not to run in to people. I felt my form was a mess and was really sucking air the last 100 m. Definitely not relaxed.
