Swim
What would you do differently?: Go to the bathroom, before the start, well before. Man, I really had to go so I rushed over to the bathroom and went. Came out and had to cut in front of someone as the number at the start line was one above me. Also, a wet suit. Without a doubt. Transition 1
Comments: Took my time as I wasn't feeling great. Out of breath and adjusting from the really freakin' cold water. That was really what slowed me down. It was so cold in the water and air it hurt. Also, had some difficulty putting on the UnderArmour while I was wet. What would you do differently?: Skip the UnderArmour, even though I love it and it's a Baltimore company (my former city). I hope to be able to be faster in future transitions - this was my first. I wasn't sweating it so I wasn't really trying to be super quick. Bike
Comments: Was a good bike! Nice course too What would you do differently?: Probably I would do the same warm-up, but then push a little / lot harder in the middle of the course. Once I got towards the end of the course and I felt I had enough energy, I then started pushing hard, which I think screwed up my running. Transition 2
Comments: Good transition. Even took some time to joke around with some fellow tri-ers. Put the bike up, shrugged my shoulders and said, "So that's it, right?" What would you do differently?: Not much. I liked having running shoes as opposed to bike shoes, that's one of the reasons why it went so well. Run
Comments: The first mile or two I was huffing and puffing and started to get worried. My HR was out of control, my calves hurt, my breathing was everywhere. It was not good. I thought about walking, but decided to just slow it down a LOT. Then, after about 2 minutes or so, my HR dropped, my breathing became really regular and I took off! It was great! such a neat feeling and I felt REALLY, really strong. What would you do differently?: Even though I took it very slow in the beginning, I would probably take it even slower. I'd also push harder in the middle and towards the end. I was saving myself because I didn't know when the course would end. Post race
Warm down: Just walked around a lot, near tears. It was very emotional. I'm still excited about the race and can't wait till the next one. What limited your ability to perform faster: Myself. I didn't want to push too hard. Event comments: It's just the swim course that bothered me, I hated having to run in part of it. Otherwise it's VERY well organized, with GREAT volunteers. Overcast
Overall Rank = 247/410
Age Group = Male 25-29
Age Group Rank = 30/36
Awoke at 3:30 or 3:45... Batavia is about an hour away, so I eventually got on the road at 4:10. This was after triple checking that I had all my equipment. That's before I left. On the way there, I checked everyting again; parnoid I forgot something. "Wait, did I see TWO shoes, or just one?" "I did remember my bike, right?" Thankfully, I had all I needed.
None. Didn't feel I needed it.
