Swim
Comments: The timing mat was way off the beach right into T1, so the official time was 12:33 but the garmin had me at 11:13 getting out of the water. This was a horrible swim, not fun at all. After we set off, I dived over the first wave, striaght into another one that promptly knocked my goggles off. Back on they went and I struggled onwards. Couldn't get into any rhythm at all, the chop really interfered with my stroke. Anyway, got out and saw the garmin, and wondered how poor the time was. A friend had had to bail as he had an asthma attack and didn't want to get into any more trouble. Shame for him, as we were due a good race together. What would you do differently?: Nothing really, the conditions got the better of me rather than me do anything wrong. Transition 1
Comments: The suit came off good and quick, on with everything, struggled to find my pocket in my top to put the gel which cost 10-15 seconds or so but after that was good. What would you do differently?: Must get some tri bike shoes and go no-socks to save time! Bike
Comments: I passed people! Lots of people! Amazing! Quite a few people passed me as well, but most of these were on TT bikes with nice wheels.... drool! But given the conditions, this was as good as could have hoped for and a great start to the season. Shows that the long, slow rides into the hills are having a good effect, even if I don't know it at the time. THe wind was so strong that I set off heading into the wind at 30km/h but ended up doing 24 just before the turnaround. Heading back downwind was a lot nicer....... 2nd lap was just the same. The McGyver'd straw in the aero-bottle worked a treat as well. Think it was only a one use item though as the plastic tubing was a bit messy at the end :) What would you do differently?: Push harder? Do more training at a higher intensity. Transition 2
Comments: Jumped off bike, ran to the bike rack, shoes on and off we go. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: OMG !!! What did I just do here? A sub 5min/k run, in a race??? Must be doing sometihng right in training. Headwind heading out was tough, but felt comfortable. Thought about pushing it after 1.5k but wasn't sure I'd make it back, so held the pace at a steady 5:10 until the turnaround then I started picking it up with the tailwind. Last 1km was all out, and was amazed to see that time. What would you do differently?: Maybe push a bit earlier? Post race
Warm down: Cup of weak gatorade and a quick stretch of the hip. What limited your ability to perform faster: Confidence in my training, and the wind! Saying that, I had a pre-race goal of 1:20 if everything went perfectly. The wind soon put a stop to that so thought anything under 1:30 would be a decent result. To end up with 1:21 is awesome, so pleased with the way I performed, especially the bike and run. Onwards and upwards! Event comments: Awesome organisation, and the vollies on the drink stations were great! Will definitely do more of these sprint races again, if they fit in with the Busso training! Up at 5:30, bit of brekkie, then drove down to Elwood and parked the car next to the run course 600m from transition.
Got body marked, watched the wind pick up into a ridiculous north-westerly blowing the bay into a lovely swell.
Pre-race hopes of a 1:20 went out of the window as I knew we would have headwinds/tailwinds for the bike and run, and I knew I wouldn't be as quick as if it was still.
Cup of coffee, banana and water later, we were ready for the off. Forgot the gel as it was in my back locked away but never mind, I knew I had one for the bike.
Had a 200m swim for a warmup - good decision to go with the wetsuit, but I wasn't really looking forward to the swim with the chop, even though the swim is my strong(ish) leg.
